Does the machine have the zigzag stich thats most commonly used in dresses brought from shop?

The "zigzag" stitch on the inside of shop-bought ready to wear clothing is actually an Overlock stitch. It's used to finish the raw fabric edges, and it has some elastic-like properties that allow the stitches to stretch and move with the fabric without snapping and breaking (think of how a seam on a close-fitting knitted/jersey stretch dress would need to stretch and move with the body). A "true" overlock stitch (typically using 3 or 4 threads - as opposed to only 2 on a normal machine - top thread + bobbin thread) can only be achieved on an Overlocker machine (commonly called a "Serger" in the USA). On an Overlocker the machine cuts and trims the seam-allowances of the fabric edges whilst also stitching them - "looper" threads are effectively wrapped around and over the edges of the fabric. An ordinary sewing machine cannot cut fabric as it stitches, nor can it wrap/loop thread over the cut edges. However, many domestic, home sewing machines have a faux (fake) stitch that closely resembles an Overlock stitch. This "mock" stitch is often called an "Elastic Overlock Stitch". And, on the Brother MF27 model there are 2 such mock stitches - no.s 17 + 18. P.S. There are special "cut and hem" style overlocker attachments that can be fitted to ordinary machines which will (in conjunction with using the faux elastic overlock stitches) cut the fabric edges for you as you stitch them. However, I'd always personally recommend investing in an Overlocker (I own one myself and love it!) if you're very keen on dressmaking as it gives a professional finish and is invaluable for making t-shirts and other jersey garments!

Will this work for sewing patches onto leather?

It goes through several layers of denim with no trouble but I have never tried leather.

Can this be used on denim/jeans?

Yes this machine is perfect for use with Denim, but also PVC/ Leather - as a Non-Stick foot is included in the box.

Brother Strong & Tough Sewing Machine.

Really happy with this sewing machine. I’ve sewn for years and had my last Brother sewing machine for more than 30 years, in my opinion Brother are the best on the market and this one is brilliant, it’s so easy to use and sews like a dream on any thickness. I love the needle threader too, it’s an added bonus with my aging eyesight!!

Perfect for any job

Great little machine. Bought to replace an older one. Works well - love the fact that it's self threading and also you don't need to alter anything to wind a bobbin. Just thread as shown on top of the machine, put the bobbin on the winder, move it across to connect with the silver spool and foot on the pedal to go. Easy peasy - love it.

Strong robust machine

Great to have needle threader. Sewing machine is strong and robust. I’ve never had a Brother machine before and it takes a while to figure out where everything is. Easy to thread and use bobbin winder. I’ve bent three needles already and am trying to figure out why? Overall I’m very pleased

Total rubbish

The first thing I noticed was how cheap and nasty the machine feels. I have had many machines over the years, and this one may look like ‘the business’ but it feels like a bottom of the range model- clunky and rough. When I threaded it I found the area around the foot tiny and fiddly to work around. But I would be willing to accept that but for it constantly skipping stitches. I rethreaded the machine, wound a fresh bobbin, changed the needle (which in the aforementioned tiny area was not easy, and I managed to stab myself badly!), changed the thread, loosened the tension, checked for lint (although there shouldn’t be any as I hadn’t made anything! And there wasn’t!) After everything I can only assume that the timing is not perfect. Perhaps if the machine had been tested the fault would have been noticed. No test strip sample under the foot of this gem! Checking reviews I found that I am not the only one to have this problem, so back it goes. Very disappointed and disgusted that they slap a premium price tag on rubbish like this.
