Review: Flickering lights, plug got very hot, then broke - 5 mins after taking out of packet! - I bought this device to attach to a set of string garden lights (the plug is indoors with the lead trailing out of a window) as they were a bit bright and I was worried they'd be shining in my neighbours windows too much. For the first 5 minutes of being plugged in, it seemed to work okay, and I turned the brightness down to around half way. But after a while I noticed the lights starting to flicker and pulse - before turning off entirely. I was worried that the lights had blown, but thankfully when I removed the dimmer plug they worked again as usual. Also the dimmer plug had become VERY hot (I suspect quite a fire hazard). It might be that the string of lights placed too much load on the dimmer plug and that it's not intended for this use, Although there wasn't a lot of documentation or guidance on what to not use the plug for! But either way, didn't work for me and I have applied for a refund. I certainly wouldn't recommend leaving these plugs unattended when you go out.
Review: and until recently it did a perfect job in dimming a table lamp - Bought this device several months ago, and until recently it did a perfect job in dimming a table lamp. One day, when I turned on the lamp, it turned on for a moment and then gone both the bulb filament and the dimmer. I tried to repair it, however, I discovered that the screws holding the appliance are non-standard, and without a special tool one cannot open it (see picture attached). I decided to sacrifice the thing and cracked it open. It turned out that its circuit does contains a fuse which is gone (picture attached). However, instead of being placed in a holder, so that one could easily swap it with a new one, this fuse is soldered into the PCB board. The series of events was pretty clear now - the incandescent was nearing the end of its lifetime, the moment it was going out, it caused a surge in current causing a blown fuse. Overall, I was somewhat disappointed to discover that such a simple device is designed in a way to render it unrepairable: first, one cannot open it using standard tools, second, the fuse is soldered in. I cannot explain it by anything, but a company's deliberate plan to make it so, and force you to buy a new one, after your old one is gone. This is a good example of planned obsolescence, which is not unheard of these days. I was just surprised to find this in such a simple device. It worked only for several months, which is quite frustrating. All these numerous poor reviews of people complaining about short lifespan totally makes sense to me now.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Will the dimmer socket work with a 15 watt mains fan (to slow it down)?**
A: I am not sure about that. I would not risk it. I heard that the motor got burnt because of using dimmer for lights. It might cause fire as well. I research it and I found some useful comments about it.dmxtothemax says: 'You will need a proper fan speed controller,Normal light dimmers are not intended to control fan motors,Electronic fan speed controllers are readily available.I am not sure if lamps can be put on these, electronic speed controllers. So perhaps you might need a separate line for the light.'hyunelan2 says: 'The reason you don't want to use a regular dimmer switch with a ceiling fan, is that the dimmer reduces the power to the fan motor - making it hard for the motor to work. This will lead to shortened fan motor life, a humming noise, and at worse-case - possibility of fire.'

**Q: I have a 50w tubular heater, would this work if i plugged it in to reduce the heat?**
A: I also have a tubular heater ( but 80watt) , and I use a plug in timer ( so many hours on ,then so many hours off) and seems to work fine.

**Q: Does this product have the CE mark on it?**
A: Hello. YES there is a CE printed on the label.

**Q: Would this work with a led twig tree? It as different setting modes but is just to bright.**
A: No it won’t. You need dimmable bulbs as well as the switch..

### ⭐ It doesn't really work
*by D***L on 8 September 2021*

A dimmer switch you plug into the wall socket and then plug your lamp into it. Less than £10! Too good to be true? Yes because it doesn't well. My lamp has halogen bulbs so maybe that's the reason- if it is it would be useful to be told that. Anyway, you dim the light about a quarter of the way on the dial - it makes a little difference but then the light just cuts out. I think this is not a universal dimmer solution - it may work on some lights (judging by other reviews) but it doesn't on mine. So you can take your chances: if it works it is a bargain but if it doesn't it's a waste of money. Too many non/obscurely branded items on Amazon may or may not work and have contradictory reviews so you are taking a chance. Not really good enough.
