## Description

The terrorist attack on the Twin Towers, the Afghan conflict, waves of migration and the presence of twelve million Muslims in the European Union: these are just a few of the things that have helped contribute to a growing interest in Islam, its culture, and its followers. They awaken old and new questions about a religious, cultural, and political reality that 1,200,000,000 people consider themselves a part of. This book is the result of a series of extended interviews between an internationally acclaimed expert on Islam and two journalists who have dedicated themselves for many years to studying key themes of Islam and analyzing the coexistence between people of different faiths and cultures. How was Islam born? What does the Koran represent for Muslims? What relationship has developed between Islam and violence, between Islamic culture and the West? How can a real integration of Islam take place in European societies? What are the conditions for a constructive encounter between Christians and Muslims? Samir Khalil Samir--one of the world's leading experts on Islam--responds to these questions in an in-depth interview that can help one learn and judge for oneself, without prejudice or naivete. This is a contribution in the spirit of the realism needed in order to build adequate ways of living with those who have become our new neighbors.

Review: Everything you wanted to Know about Islam but were afraid to Ask.... - This book is a must-read for anyone who sees the need to understand what Islam is about, something to be avoided only at the price of political and theological blindness.... This book is written by a man who is both sympathetic toward and critical of Islam. Samir knows its philosophical and theological backgrounds, as well as its history from its appearance in the seventh century on the Arabian peninsula. The book’s presentation is frank, pulls no punches, but never speaks without accurate knowledge and clear conviction. The question-and-answer format of the book works well. The questions cover most of the basic issues, from suicide bombing to the status of women to the Muslim understanding of Christianity. We really have no idea what we are up against unless we take a careful look at what is held theologically and what has happened historically in the Muslim world and its understanding of the world outside itself.... In short, the “111 questions” of the title of this very incisive book are designed to ask every question one may have had since Islam forced itself before our daily attention. Again, Father Samir is both a hard-headed and sympathetic critic of Islam in all its phases. The book has much force to it precisely because it is written by someone who has been in immediate contact with Islam all his life. He has studied the texts and the history. But he also knows both Christianity and what we call the modern state. The book is often as hard-hitting about the West as it is about Islam. When one has finished this book, he sees the Muslim with clearer eyes. [...]
Review: Logical, Clear, Fair and Disturbing - I only read a portion of the book, but the author definitely seemed to know what he was talking about... giving both sides on Islamic theology, the nature of Jihad, the Islamic history of military aggression... The question answer format was also very helpful for someone who doesn't know much about Islam. It was worth the price, and I was grateful for the lack of political correctness and sugar-coating...

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Middle Eastern Jesuit priest makes Islam accessible to Westerners
*by T***T on November 8, 2013*

This is a question-and-answer book featuring 111 articles on Islam written in a popular style. The author, a Middle Eastern Jesuit priest, knows both the Catholic and Muslim traditions from his own life experiences. As an introduction to Middle Eastern forms of Islam for Western Christian readers, this book is ideal. I would highly recommend it for anyone who wants a frank but respectful introduction to Islam from a Christian perspective. Although the author is a Catholic priest, he writes here for a wide audience. This text is ideal for people who want to learn about Islam while staying firmly rooted in a Western Christian perspective.
