For more than double the price, how does this differ from the ikea idealisk potato ricer (other than the branding)?

Since we do not produce IKEA's potato ricer, we cannot be certain about the grade of stainless steel that it is made from. However, because IKEA's description does not state the grade of stainless steel, this suggests that it is made with 18/0 stainless steel (aka 430 grade).
 
The Beast Canteen potato ricer is made of 18/8 stainless steel, which is a step up from 18/0.
 
The "8" in 18/8 means that this grade of stainless steel contains 8% nickel content. Comparatively, 18/0 contains no nickel content. This difference is important for three reasons. First, 18/8, compared to 18/0, is more corrosion resistant (we never want rust to touch our food). Second, 18/8 is a stronger material and welds better, resulting in enhanced durability. Third, the presence of 8% nickel also allows for an elegant, high-polished finish, as compared to 18/0 (more of a brushed finish). We designed this potato ricer for functionality, durability and also for beauty.

This potato ricer is made in China. That being said, Beast Canteen is a Canadian company based in Toronto. We work closely with our manufacturing partner to maintain quality. We also layered our design elements on this stainless steel potato ricer. All pieces of this potato ricer are made of 18/8 stainless steel (even the swing joint). We purposely choose this material for its high corrosion resistance (it won’t rust) and durability. An additional benefit is that the higher nickel content (the 8%) gives this kitchen tool a high shine, polished finish.

I can share with you that our manufacturing partner more commonly makes this product with 430 stainless steel, which lacks the nickel content of 18/8. 430 stainless steel contains 0.5% to 1.0% nickel whereas our 18/8 contains 8% nickel. 18/8 compared to 430 also is stronger as the metal has a higher tensile strength and welds better. 18/8 costs more but we believe in paying more for quality that lasts.

We believe in having tools that are highly functional, extremely durable and easy to clean (it’s dishwasher safe). All of these elements are designed into our potato ricer.
