I washed it once and wore it tied loosely around my neck for several days. The cotton-blend material is okay, not especially comfortable nor uncomfortable. The bandana is treated with Permethrin, an odorless pesticide. It is not supposed to repel insects. What it is supposed to do is incapacitate or kill insects upon contact before they can bite you.
