Lepai LP-2020TI Hi-Fi Mini Class D Stereo Amplifier - 20W Max at 4 Ohms, 12W Max at 8 Ohms, Digital Audio Solution with Power Supply

Before picking up a couple of these little amps, I read up on the amp-classification issue and Lepy vs Lepai branding. This seller is right on top of the chatter, marketing the TI circuitry and such. It's been years since I paid close enough attention to audiophile issues, but I felt comfortable enough with the new product to order a couple. Right now I'm listening to one driving Polk Audio bookshelf speakers which I have running as background "infill" for a whole-house system running Chromecast Audio. And I'll be darned if I notice a substantial difference in sound quality in comparison with far more expensive receivers & speakers on other zones. At this price point, I have to call it a miracle. After I've given these neat little devices more of a workout, I'll come back and bump them up to five stars. If the miracle holds out. (Edit: Two months later, I now own three of these and have given two more as gifts. I also own Accuphase and McIntosh gear and though it's apostasy to say so, this one gives more bang for your buck. So: 5 Stars.) Update: A week later, so far so good. Have two of them hooked up and they never even get warm and I have cranked them a bit. Sound is still reasonably clean which is amazing at the price point. There can be a touch of shrillness in the upper midrange but since I'm usually listening to Pandora the source material can be the issue. One note: when you switch them off, there's an unpleasant transient pop delivered to your speakers--not loud enough to blow anything, but annoying nonetheless. Not enough to cut a star from the rating anyway. PS: Please note that I have made reference multiple times to this item's price. It's because that's the context within which I can refer to these amps as 'small miracles'. They're certainly not going to outperform a $1500 amp, but they'll definitely give your average $100-150 amp a run for their money. BTW, on both of my units, the bass and treble controls (as well as the balance control for that matter) work fine. HTH!

Found a pair of Polk R150 bookshelf speakers for $39, so I needed a small amp to power them. The speakers say they need 20 watts to power them, so this little amp just makes the cut. To my surprise, it really matches up well. To test it, I set them up on the dining room table and hooked the amp to the headphone jack on the Chromebook. I set the amp volume to max and bypassed the tone control then used the volume setting on the Chromebook to adjust sound level. I started a playlist on Youtube and let it play for about 4 hours. The sound was loud enough but pleasant and balanced, neither boomy or tinny. The amp stayed cool the whole time and the wall wart got only slightly warm. At full volume, you can hear a little hum if you lean in close to the speakers, but it's pretty unnoticeable if you turn it to below 70%. This is now hooked up to my TV with the speakers on stands I already had. It's a big improvement over the TV speakers and much better then any soundbar I've found for less than $100. No big deal for regular TV, but really improves streamed or disc sources. Only drawback is my TV only has direct audio out, so the remote won't control the volume. If you have a headphone jack with variable audio out, you're golden. Pretty good $69 stereo!

It is an OK amplifier, not ultra high quality, but what do you expect for $30. Actually, it is a pretty good deal for a mid-fi system. If you are on a really tight budget, then this . amplifier and a pair of monoprice, and/or Dayton audio $60. Speakers is a fair deal. It says that it will take a 4ohm load, but when I paralleled 2, 8 ohm speakers on heavy bass music, it shut down to protect itself. (They are safe for anything down to about 6 ohms I guess.). If you need two pairs I guess you will have to wire them in series, (which I hate to do.). Overall, if you want a cheep system that has reasonable quality then this amplifier will do well in a pinch. UPDATE- As I used this amplifier for a few months, I discovered that, for it’s price point it is quite good. I am using it to push a pair of Monoprice 6.5 speakers. I use them for deck top use and they are adequate for casual use. It is definitely not an audiophile quality, but it gets the job done. All in all, an excellent choice for a budget system. P. S. When I said it could not push a 4 ohm load, I found out that the two pairs of speaker were both 6 ohms nominal, ( which means that they may dip down to 4 ohms, or even less, in spots, so the amplifier is indeed,, 4 ohms stable. ) so, for the money, it is a pretty good deal, for a modest sound system.

I moved into a house with existing speakers mounted to the wall of a porch. I was curious if they were any good, and if they needed replacing I’d need an amp anyway. This little guy fit the bill and the price point was great for the fit and finish. The bass and treble knobs seemed to have an odd range for adjustment, like maxed out sounded like where the mid should be, but perhaps that was some character of the found speakers. Anyway, I got it balanced out and it reproduces sound accurately. I paired this with an Echo Input, which I now use as a patio music server, and I use the Echo device to control volume. Just tell Echo to play at “10” then turn the amp knobs to the loudest you plan to listen to. Then tell Echo to back off to maybe a “volume 6” and enjoy. Later I added a headphone splitter from the Echo Input and fed that to an old Klipsch sub I had laying around. The resulting diminished output isn’t enough to wale the sub when in idle mode, but the amp handles is fine. To have the sub present without having to hit a switch on the back or leaving it on all the time, I tied the sub and this amp to an exterior smart switch. Then I hid all wires, amp, and sub in an exterior Suncast box with holes for the sub to breathe. Now I say “turn on porch” and I hear the light speaker pop indicating the amp is running and ready to jam. For reference, I’m a bit if an audiophile. I built Zaph audio BAMTM as my mains and C-notes as my surrounds for 7.1 theater. Currently running a Klipsch 12” down firing, but working on building two “full Marty” subs with 18” Ultimax. I also used to be a musician, and even played at the North Sea Jazz Fest. I just see a lot of reviews loving and hating and was curious of their background, so here’s a bit of mine. PS: I hate Bose!

I am no audio expert but I am perfectly happy with this amplifier. I am using it at less than half volume which is perfectly adequate. I don't have great quality speakers but the sound I am getting is as pleasant, clear and as pure as I was looking for and I am more than satisfied with the quality I am getting. Really, for this low, low price most ordinary non audiophile folks like me couldn't go wrong. The blue glow around the volume control is a little bright but I hardly ever notice it when I am looking at my two monitors. The sudden "boing/popping" sound when the unit is turned off is a little unsettling at first but why should one fuss about that, this is a very minor point to be concerned about in such a delightfully efficient product that does everything it is expected to do. Only true audiophiles should keep looking around and checking the minutest details when looking for an amplifier, the rest of us should just sit back and enjoy this product for what it is, perfectly capable and heck.....very cheaply priced.

*I bought this peticular amp to use in a boat/rv enviroment where 120 isn't always available, but 12v DC is. I havn't even hooked it up to a battery to see how it works in that aplication, but that's the reason I got this one.* The amp its' self seems to work really well, it drives a pair of name brand compact bookshelf speakers to a decent volume. They're a little light weight, and rated to the same wattage as the output. The bass control will cause clipping if it and the volume are turned up too far together. I havn't tried another pair of speakers to determine if it's the amp or the speakers, but listenability is good, and I usually have plenty of extra volume for casual listening. The BAD: There's no ballance control....nuff said about that. Worse: The power supply is a switching type (google it if you want to know more...it's way easier than me explaining it)...and it has almost no filtering on it, so it's really noisy, and almost useless if you want to play a radio through it unless you put some snap on ferrite beads on the imput lines. A decent power supply wouldn't cost that much more. I didn't have any issue playing other sources. All in all I'd recomend this for playing mp3s etc. as an alternitive to a bluetooth speaker.

I originally ordered 2 of these as these were highly recommended by many in my multiple groups. 1 I received was brand new while the 2nd was already used. It had gunk in the crevices and in the power supply, had a weird smell to it and the power supply that was with the used one was the wrong one. The one included was thicker than the one I got with the new one and after further inspection of the power supply, it was for 14 volts and not 12 volts. With it having the incorrect power supply that was a higher voltage than it was rated for, it would most likely blow something if the previous owner didn't already. So I ordered a replacement. I got the replacement delivered toady to get yet another used one and this time the power supply was correct but when plugging it in there is a bad connection as it wasn't keeping it powered on the whole time unless cable was twisted and kinked a certain way. This is just sad and uncalled for. These things would have been found by doing some simple visual look of the product and simple QA. Sad a company is too lazy to do something so simple and expected of them. Also, If I am ordering an item to be new and not used, damaged, or refurbished, I expect it to function and look new.

Seven years ago, I setup all my TVs with surround sound, purchasing expensive speakers, powered by an expensive Yamaha amplifier. Over the years I begin to realize that stereo sound provided all the realism I needed, plus even a minor change in setting up this system was a large effort. Stereo sound could more easily be obtained with what is called "computer speakers" if the TV has a 3.5 mm (earphone) sound output connection. Although these speakers were satisfactory, they were not capable of the volume or frequency range I enjoyed with the Yamaha, so I started a search for a simple, inexpensive amplifier for my original speakers. This Class D Stereo amplifier cost 10% the cost of the Yamaha, uses the same 3.5 mm connection as the computer speakers, so it was easy to setup. The sound volume and quality are as good as the Yamaha easily powering the my old speakers, including a passive subwoofer. Dec 2021 Update: I have now purchased 4 of these amplifiers, the last 2 after relizing I could use my TiVo remote to change sound volume. I was miss-lead when I could not change any sound on my external speaker; instead, only the sound changed on the TV's internaly speaker, and there was no turn those speakers off. I'd now rate the review at 6 stars, if I could. If your TV is like most new one where they are capable of turning off any internal speakers, you cannot go wrong with this amplifier.
