Waterproof has a very specific meaning. Waterproof means you could dunk this in a pool and no water will get inside. No, this is not waterproof. It is designed to be weather resistant. Which means if you put it on your porch under the eaves, the contents should stay dry. If you have a hard wind and rain storm, the contents may get a bit wet. But nothing like if the boxes were just sitting on your porch. A regular mailbox is weather resistant, not waterproof.

Can this be bolted down? What keeps a thief from simply taking the whole thing?

Yes you can bolt it down. It will come with bolts too. It would be some work to just carry it off. It has a false bottom so you can fill with sand. I filled mine with bricks.

What is the measurement of the front edge (vertical) of the lid so I can make 'lift here' letters while I wait for delivery of the box?

You have a little over 1-1/2”. I did the same. I am waiting on a plaque that amazon sells that is 3/4x6. It says lift here. Most delivery persons can’t figure out by themselves.
