Great for some ideas

Boys and their toys! This year I heard that my Granddaughter was getting wood carving/whittling tools for her husband and two sons (34, 10 and 8 respectively). So I decided that all the "boys" should have something along those lines. :) This book and the wood carving kit that my Grandson and Grandson-in-law had under the tree were a big surprise ... and exciting gift, if the responses were true! Come the spring thaw, big and not so big boys will be sitting around the campfire sharing ideas. Btw, the girls will be there, too. Lol. This book has lots of ideas for beginners of all ages. I can't wait to see what they all do!

This is a decent book. It's not great, but it's ok. It does have plenty of the very basic info you would want or need if you're a bare bones beginner. But, the knife/ blade section is all about pocket knives, and doesn't cover any of the other times of knives you might use, like from a wood carving kit. But, it is a "whittling" book, not a wood carving book, so... **shrug** Some of the projects and instructions offered are pretty beginner friendly, and simple, but some are not very beginner friendly, at all. Only a couple of the projects have usable profile patterns, and none have any patterns from anything other than a single profile view. It's a whine, not a true complaint. Considering it's a book, not video, and considering it's a starter GUIDE, it does pretty much everything it can do, or needs to do. It does OK at what it says it is, it just doesn't do it great. Would I recommend it??? Maybe, but I would also recommend trying to find something to supplement it.

Got this for my husband and he’s obsessed. It’s super beginner-friendly and breaks everything down without feeling overwhelming. The projects are actually fun and doable. Definitely recommend if you’re just starting out or want something relaxing to do on the weekend!

I got the book just over an week ago and I’ve already tackled a few projects. And I’ve already started feeling like I’m creating cool woodsy handcrafts, like these pencil Santas and a “five Minute Wizard.” And I have ZERO previous wood carving experience. They start out with really good info on knives, sharpening, protection, and the few basic cuts that you build on over time. I’m using just a regular couple of pocket knives so far-a swiss army “climber” and a Buck for big cuts- but I did order finger protection along with the book. I also already have a wood burner, so adding this detail was straightforwards. My only gripe with the book is that a couple of the projects are reealllllly not “complete beginner” stuff. Unless you have carpentry tools and are looking to add “whittling” to your skill set, you aren’t really going to have a bandsaw to make the musical frog or table saw to cut a square blank into two triangular ones…but the vast majority of projects are just a knife and some wood. Bottom line-big fan, highly recommended.

I had not picked up a whittling knife when I purchased this book. When I first read it I thought how easy it will be. It shows you the basics, the different techniques, how to make the cuts. It shows you how to level your hand, and step by step pictures on each of the very cute projects. Then I tried my first project and failed. My owl looked like it had been thru a world war. I went to a hobby shop and was old my knives were very dull (even though I had sharpened them) and that caused the many slip ups. So blades sharpened correctly I tried again and my owl looked better but still ended in the fire pile. In hindsight don’t do that, save them to remember the first errors. I say all this because the book is awesome and gives perfect instructions but remember to expect that you will need to PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Good luck everyone.

Verdaderamente lo compré porque trabajo con madera y me hizo gracia, pero trae cosas que están curiosas para pasar un buen rato. La unica pega es que viene todo en inglés, pero aunque no lo domines mucho te apañas porque es muy ilustrativo

El libro realmente no trae mucho, los diseños son muy burdos no fueron de mi agrado, realmente no se le puede sacar provecho a este libro

Joli livre, mais pas assez 'simple' pour un débutant à mon avis.
