Q: Why does the wifi extender need to be in the upright position, and what happens if it doesn't?

The unit will work in all configurations but the loss of antenna power will be reduced changing the range significantly. When in the down position the signal needs the reflect from the floor whereas in the upright position the signal is free to travel up and around reflecting off ceiling to open areas. If you place behind furniture pointing down makes it much worst. Good luck.
