However, you can program another button to act as the cable box on/off command. If your mother does not or rarely uses the 'Mute' button then you could teach the remote the command of turning the cable box on and off. This would be the only possible way of doing it for the time being. I don't remember how to hide channels on Dish, but on DirecTV, you create a Favorites list of the channels you want to see, and then you make your favorites list active. His hands shake and he has difficulty using the standard remote that came with his TV. He presses the wrong buttons all the time and messes up the TV inputs and channel programming. I found this BIG BUTTON remote and I am so happy with the product. Only 6 BIG buttons and it allows the person to turn the TV on and off, change channels, adjust volume. Programming the remote to work with his TV was simple and finished in about one minute. This remote "learns" from the original TV remote so you can program anything to any button on this remote. I programmed volume, channel and on/off. It also has a Mute button, but I did not program that button because I felt this elderly man could press the mute button by mistake and cut the sound off and not know why there it is no sound. So I just did not program the mute button so it does nothing when pressed. The buttons light up bright green when pressed so it is very easy to see at night. I purchased the white remote because the furniture in the room is dark brown and I felt having a black remote would make it difficult for a person to see it when it is on an end table or dresser. The white stands out. The gentleman was thrilled to have this remote and can now watch TV without pressing wrong buttons and messing things up. I'm sure the staff at the nursing home will really like the remote since they will not longer have to keep going to the room to figure out why the TV is messed up!
