Not quite sure what you mean. The diameter of the arms is about 20mm. The measurement from where it's clamped to my desk to how far it extends outwards is about 55cm. - This is variable though, because it really depends what angle you extend it outwards at. All 3 arm sections are different lengths and can be configured in whatever arrangement you like. So it's really up to you how far you want it to stretch, or high up you have it. Hope this helps.

Does the smaller 20cm arm unscrew from the base to let you use a 30cm arm in that position?

no. The arm that connects to the base ( table bracket) is fixed by weld. I bought the additional arm too. This is may be useful to you if you need a specific height. This is a good camera mount.
