## Description

This premium RTL-SDR was designed, developed and fabricated by Nooelec in the USA and Canada in order to implement a wide array of feature requests. The integrated, highly-regulated 4.5V 250mA bias-tee is ready to power your RF accessories--no hardware or software modifications are required to activate the bias-tee. The bias-tee is protected by an automatically resetting fuse, to ensure your investment is safe from accidental short-circuits of the RF input.Compared to R820T-based devices, this E4000-based SDR excels at sensitivity at 1500MHz, and is capable of far higher frequencies--up to approximately 2300MHz. There is a small gap in frequency capability near 1100MHz. As such, we do NOT recommend this device for ADS-B usage. For ADS-B, consider NESDR SMArt, also available on desertcart. For full product specifications, please visit our website at nooelec.com Included: ✔ NESDR SMArTee XTR SDR in silver brushed aluminum enclosure SDR Specifications: ✔ RTL2832U Demodulator/USB interface IC ✔ E4000 tuner IC ✔ Integrated, always-on bias-tee (4.5V, 250mA max) ✔ 0.5PPM, ultra-low phase noise TCXO ✔ 2 RF-suitable voltage regulators ✔ Shielded primary inductor ✔ Integrated custom heatsink✔ 2 silicone pads ✔ Female SMA antenna input ✔ High-quality silver brushed aluminum enclosure ✔ Frequency capability approximately 65MHz-2300MHz, with small frequency gap near 1100MHzTCXO Specifications: ✔ Frequency stability: 0.5PPM (max) ✔ Phase noise @1kHz offset: -138dBc/Hz (or better) ✔ Phase noise @10kHz: -150dBc/Hz (or better) ✔ Phase noise @100kHz: -152dBc/Hz (or better)

Review: NOAA compatible SDR - If you're an enthusiast looking to dive deep into the world of NOAA weather satellite reception, the NESDR SMArTee XTR SDR should be high on your list of considerations. This compact and highly efficient software-defined radio (SDR) is a gem for weather aficionados and technophiles alike. Right out of the box, the NESDR SMArTee XTR impresses with its robust build quality and ease of setup. It’s clear that the design has been optimized for users who want a mix of performance and convenience. The inclusion of a bias tee powered by the USB connection itself is particularly noteworthy, eliminating the need for an external power source and simplifying the overall setup. One of the standout features of the NESDR SMArTee XTR is its extended frequency range, which covers from 65 MHz to 2300 MHz. This wide range is perfect for capturing signals from NOAA weather satellites, which operate around the 137 MHz band. The sensitivity and selectivity of the receiver are exceptional, ensuring clear and crisp reception of weather images and data without the interference often found in lesser models. The performance in decoding NOAA APT transmissions is particularly impressive. Paired with the right antenna, the SMArTee XTR captures vivid images that can help in real-time weather monitoring and forecasting. This capability is invaluable for both professional meteorologists and hobbyists who rely on up-to-the-minute weather data. For those new to satellite reception, the learning curve can be steep, but the SMArTee XTR comes with access to a supportive community and a wealth of online resources that help ease this transition. The compatibility with popular SDR software platforms adds to its flexibility, allowing users to tailor their setup to their specific needs and interests.
Review: Better Than Expected - Buy It - Based on reviews, I wanted a HackRF One, but my auction order was canceled. Since the HackRF One was basically out of stock everywhere or well over $300 and I was too impatient to wait for a shipment from China, I decided to try the NESDR SMArTee XTR SDR in the meantime. It was less than $40, so there wasn't much to lose. As you can see and here in my video, it works VERY WELL. I expected lots of static and poor performance since even the Great Scott Gadgets tutorial on YouTube had a fair amount of static in lesson 1. Granted, I likely have better signal strength here in South Florida, and I think my antenna is a bit better than the stock telescoping rod they were using in the video. Instead, the RTL-SDR gave surprising good performance. That said, it's not a replacement for the HackRF One. The first thing you'll notice, if you attempt to build any of the HackRF projects, is that you'll need to drastically reduce the sample rate. The HackRF One can handle a 20MHz sampling rate; the RTL-SDR SMArTee XDR sampling rate is an order of magnitude lower - 2 MHz. Furthermore, the RTL-SDR is receive only and that definitely limits its capabilities. Even so, if you are looking for a cheap introduction to SDR, then definitely buy the RTL-SDR SMArTee XTR. You won't regret it.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What does it do? There is a description of it that tells me nothing. What’s it for? what does it do?**
A: It is an SDR, seems pretty self explanatory to me and probably anyone else seeking out this product. Why would they waste valuable space explaining what an SDR doesn't when you can very easily seek out that information yourself. The product description is for specification and details about the product that the people seeking to buy it would need to make an educated purchase. Do you complain about the product pages for toilet paper because they don't explain what it is used for in the description, or is this just a one time thing?

**Q: will this work with usb 3.0 without zadig?**
A: Yes, this SDR is compatible with USB 3.0 ports. If you're using a Windows machine, you will need to utilize Zadig for the driver installation procedure. Please contact Nooelec directly for assistance with the driver installation. Thank you!

**Q: do i need an upconverter with the nesdr-xtr bundle?**
A: It depends on what applications you're most interested in. The upconverter will allow you to listen to frequencies between 100kHz to 65 MHz, whereas the frequency range of this SDR on its own is 55 MHz to 2300 MHz. Thanks for your question!

**Q: How much bandwidth can be viewed by sdrsharp etc?**
A: 3.2 MHz with USB 3.0 as the tuner IC is a E4000.

### ⭐ Not reliable
*by S***E on December 3, 2025*

I get about 2 to 3 years out of these, and then they lose their sensitivity. I find the USB plugs are also fragile. Subseptiable to FM radio interference is really bad. They are OK if you are a beginner. Don't expect these radios to be reliable for long.
