does this device require dye in the freon to work?

No. It detects the presence of refrigerant gas to signal a leak. Dye is just another way to find a leak as well as soapy water.

When I'm using UV do I need special glasses?

Amber/Yellow glasses helped me a lot. I had a uv flashlight that lit up brighter than this. Since I was working on a system that had been repaired multiple times, there was uv dye from previous leaks. This is where the "sniffer" part helped. It has been a long time since I last used it, but it did work well.

The detractors came with out the flash light that showed be attached

No accurate let me open the dashboards of the car to check evaporator of my car a/c because it’s showing there is leaks too much sound with # but when i open the evaporator clear no signs of leaks so need a day to reset the dashboard
