How is the noise cancelation on these headphones? Looking for something that can block out busy office/classroom noise.

They are rated very highly, even by the NY Times, but their reliability is very questionable. I had to return 3 pairs for various defects. Their customer service was great but I would have preferred not to have to deal with customer service. They diminished low pitch noise on an airplane quite well, but they are not as good on high frequency noise, although I don’t think any headphone would do that totally. Good luck if you purchase them.

I don't use bluetooth--do these phones have optional wires to connect to phone for audiobooks?

These come with a cord so that you can plug them into your device and skip the bluetooth. You also get better sound quality when you use the cord as BT compresses the signal.

Can I substitute alkaline batteries for the lithium ones which may be banned from a flight?

Lithium batteries are used in cell phones, laptops, tablets, cordless shavers and many more devices. You can take any of these in your carry-on bag or luggage. Headphones will not be a problem.
