I have a small dog.** A: The surface is hot but nothing to be concerned with. If it does get to hit it will shut off. We have no concerns with our two year old being around it. I highly recommend it. **Q: Can it operate simply as a fan without heating or cooling?** A: It doesn't have a setting that is strictly fan, but to be honest the cooling setting isn't really air conditioner cool it's pretty much a fan in itself **Q: How noisy is this product** A: It's not noisy at all. Of course there is a slight hum (it's a machine). However, it's NOT loud AT ALL. And in my opinion it's a wonderful product. **Q: How tall is this item? I love the jet black - makes it feel luxurious and up to date. The black doesn’t attract dust as well surprisingly unlike the white because I have the white one as well. Perfect on top of a dresser or a table. I’m giving it a 4 starts because the heating is superb but the cooling system is more like a light weight. Depending on the purpose or use of it will make the difference in the reviews.
