I was amazed that I’d never heard this story before, but I’m delighted that it has been written now. The story of Doc and Jim Key IS at its heart one of kindness, and I love that Donna Janell Bowman kept the focus on this special relationship between man and horse. Doc used kindness as a teaching tool, and proved to the world that even a horse could learn. Doc also overcame obstacles of prejudice, ridicule, and segregation through his dedication and determination. This message is so timely, and I have loved sharing this book with my students. They love this unlikely story of gentle Doc and Beautiful Jim Key. The author’s notes at the back are detailed, meticulous, and so helpful for teachers and readers that would like more background information about this amazing story. This book was nominated for the Texas Bluebonnet Award, and truly deserves this honor.

A picture book with heart, Step Right Up shows readers a beautiful piece of history accented by stunning illustrations. Children who love animals will love this book, and it is equally appropriate for both boys and girls. The accomplishments of Doc Key, unheard of in his day, are understated, as his kindness and love for Jim takes center stage. Lots of interesting and historical back matter lends itself to further exploration. Great book for the classroom, library or any personal collection. Adults who are animal lovers will enjoy it, too.

A true, little known story about a man who taught his horse how to read, write, and count with patience and kindness. The illustrations are colorful and eye-catching. This book is not just for children. Adults will love it too.

These books are great for kids to see a real hero. It is a true story and I was inspired to get a copy of the kids version for my granddaughter and the regular version for my mother who loves to read true stories when I saw the documentary on TV.

This enthralling read is a compelling story about kindness to all living creatures. Bowman's back matter dives deeper for those who want to know more, and Minter's illustrations are gorgeous. One of the best picture book biographies out there. A classic story the world really needs today.

This is a fascinating story. I had never heard of Doc and Jim Key. The things that Jim Key, the horse, could do were truly miraculous. And Doc was a gifted, kind and wonderful human being. A great book for those who love horses.
