Classic Dungeon Crawling Goodness reskinned with better graphics.
This was without a doubt one of the best packing jobs of a game I have ever received. I wonder if Hasbro had some problems with initial shipments because this was obviously packed at the manufacturer. The production quality on this is extremely high. The size is what you remember if you played the classic version except everything is packed much better in the box. Looks great with amazing character models for the miniatures - the new sculpts are gorgeous. A great entry-level dungeon crawl experience that cam be enhanced with several expansions.

Perfect game from the past
What a blast from my past. I still have my original HeroQuest set and just had to get this new version. Everything about it is incredible. The details on the figurines is incredible. Where the original had cardboard furniture with plastic pieces, this he version has detailed plastic pieces. The design for storage inside the box is very near and organized. Much better than the original release ever had. This have is a great introduction board game for younger players or newer gamers that might be looking to get into D&D style games but are out of by the steep learning curve that comes with those games. Definitely recommend downloading the companion app so you can play solo or join in the fun with a group of players.

Awesome Board Game. Easy to learn and play. Minis are amazing.
I have been wanting this game for so long. My wife bought it for me for Christmas and I love it! I have painted everything in it and now I have even bought the first expansion with plans to buy more. The game is very simple to play and a great way to get people into ttrpgs. If you want to introduce someone to D&D but think it may be too much for them, HeroQuest is the perfect gateway. I have been playing with my son, my best friend and his two sons and we are having a blast. I plan to use it for game nights with my D&D crew too when we don't have time for a full D&D game. Its just so much fun to play and so easy to understand. The rules are simple and you can be up and playing with a group very fast. There is also a mobile app which lets you play without the game master. The app acts as that so you can play solo or with a group if you want to be the player rather than the gm. The minis are fantastic as is the terrain. BUY IT!

Comparison to the original
In all the pictures I took, the original is shown above or to the right. Some of my original pieces are painted, they did not originally come that way. One thing not shown is that unlike in the original, only the skulls are on sprews the first time you open the box. Another is that the sarcophagus actually opens. The box art is different, but similar, and the box is not as wide, but is much taller. I disagree with the 14+ age recommendation. I'd say 8+, a player needs to be able to read, do basic addition and subtraction, and play a game that takes over an hour. There's no blood or anything that warents a 14+ either. The board is bigger as are the squares of the grid. I prefer the unhelmeted knight depicted on the lid of the original sarcophagus as well as the etchings on the pages of the origanal book on the sorcerer's table. However, in the new edition, the candlesticks are not as crazy tall or as easy to break and there are no cardboard component to any of the furniture. The skulls and rats in the new version don't have pegs so you can place them wherever or not even use them. The doors are also not cardboard. Very excited about this. I think that perhaps reviewers who complain about the quality of the remake remember playing the game decades ago, but don't actually have an original to compare to. The hero and monster miniatures are slightly larger than the original, have round instead of square bases, and have way more detail. The elf hero as well as a third of the goblins and half of the orcs are female. I do really like the armor on the original gargoyle though. The character sheets are slightly larger in the Avolon Hill version and the dice are plastic instead of wood. The armory is replaced with cards and the rules specify that they are always in stock even though there are a limited number of cards. There are also 4 additional items available. The character cards are on two regular cards per hero instead of the big square cardboard ones in the original. The treasure and spell decks are all the same. The Fimir has been replaced by Abomination with the same stats and all references of "chaos" have been replaced with "Dread". This is probably due to Games Workhop and their Warhammer copyright. There are 4 new artifact cards, but as far as I can tell all quests are exactly the same. Perhaps the new artifacts are for custom quests. The stairs tile and the wide block tiles have an alternate art on the reverse side as opposed to just being blank. There is a tile with a gold symbol that I can't find any reference to, so I assume it's to mark who's turn it is. Otherwise all tiles are the same. The rule and quest booklets are glossy and bound with thread instead of staples. The rules are the same, but there are some clarifications where the original rule booklet was vague. Zargon's screen is also the same but seems to remain standing better than the original one. Overall I'm extremely pleased with this purchase and will definitely use the Avolon Hill version more often. I look forward to getting the two quest packs that are available and hope they reprint the other four as well.

Incredibly fun!!!
I remember seeing commercials for HeroQuest when I was less than ten years old. Took me 30 years to get it and it was well worth the wait. HeroQuest is an easy to play and incredibly fun game and it serves as a great training ground for tabletop RPG players.

HeroQuest rocks!!!
I love this game. I originally purchased based HQ:First Light, but upgraded to the original. Solo play is awesome with the app. Super fun game without the app as well.

Shipping: I received my item in EXCELLENT condition. The game was in a box straight from Hasbro factory box into an Amazon box. ( 2X boxes!) So the game box itself was in pristine condition. No missing parts/figured. Game Board also intact, perfect condition. So this is a good size box filled with tons of figures (both monsters AND furniture) which will likely find use in custom DnD games! Great for many ages; some "classes" could easily be played by someone as young as 10yrs of age ("simple" character with "simple" skills) Plays with a friend and my husband; all over the age of 40 lol It was fun. We're DnD veterans so this was light and chill. However, giving us the DnD itch! Again, they have age 14 on the box, but I was pretty cool when I was 10... lol I know, kids nowadays are not how us 80s kids were built, but hey - to each their own! It's expensive, might be worth waiting to see if it ever goes on sale; but this game is just getting harder to find, so maybe don't wait too long!

Box arrived in surprisingly immaculate condition for international shipping. Unfortunately, game board is torn (on the exact same spot with a suspiciously similar damage pattern with previous review.)
