Academy Award Winner Julie Andrews, enchanting newcomer Anne Hathaway and Hector Elizondo (Pretty Woman) lead a charmed cast in Disney's The Princess Diaries, a hilarious, hip and heartwarming modern day Cinderella story. Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway) is a bright but terribly shy and gawky teenager whose goal in life is to survive each school day with a minimum of attention and embarrassment. Unfortunately her wish to be invisible is thwarted when her estranged grandmother arrives and delivers the shocking news that she's a real-life princess - heir to the throne of Genovia! Furious and incredulous, the reluctant royal agrees to take "princess lessons" and make the biggest decision of her life - in three weeks. And so begins a comical transformation towards poise and princess-ness when she finds herself in the middle of a media storm, jealous schoolmates and a plot to take over her country. Funny, uplifting and affirming - your entire family will thoroughly enjoy this crown jewel. Cute movie. Review: A movie I'll never tire of watching - Love this sweet coming-of-age story wrapped in an urban teenager's discovery that she is the sole heir to the throne of a small kingdom. This movie deftly avoids all the tired tropes that have spun from that pitch. Instead, it delivers witty, realistic scenarios as Mia navigates high school angst we all went through of not fitting in as a young teen in general--then gets hit with a much bigger how-can-I-ever-fit-in scenario. Anne Hathaway as Mia was only 17 when this movie was filmed, and I can't imagine anyone playing this role but her. Ditto for Julie Andrews as her estranged royal relative. This is not only a must-watch movie but also an I'll-watch-it-again movie.

Best of the early 2000s
Anne Hathaway in the early 2000s was a vibe and I was there for it and still am! I had so much fun sharing this favorite movie of mine with my daughter. She now absolutely loves it and wants to be a princess just like Mia. Great family movie!

Charming
This is certainly one of the most charming films I have seen in a while. It deals with the old fable of the girl who is told she is a princess and is going to be taken off into a magical land where she can be happy. The Princess Diaries takes this story and puts it into into a modern teenage context. Mia plays a dejected unpopular teenager who has no pride in herself or in her appearance, her friends are all a little bit off-the-wall and outspoken. She daydreams about the popular boy of the school dating her, etc, all the usual stuff that can be expected from somebody in her position. The film deals with the sudden and drastic changes that happen in her life, and how everyone around her reacts to what is happening. Her true friends think that she is selling out as her image is glamorised, people start wanting to be friends with her because of her position, and all the while Mia is still the same shy worrisome teenager beneath it all. The film carries a moral message - that its what's inside that counts, and that just because she was made a Princess it doesn't make her any more special than she was before. I think this film is hugely enjoyable, filled with moments that are really quite funny as well as moments that can be really quite touching. Wonderful stuff.

Twelve Year old really enjoyed this movie version of Meg Cabot's book.
My twelve year old is a huge fan of The Princess Diaries books by Meg Cabot, so I ordered this for her. She really enjoyed it, but when I asked for star rating, she gave it 4. She says this is because they changed some things too much from the book. Otherwise, thumbs up :)
