Because of scalpers. Amazon should not be enabling this. I get eBay taking part, since that is what that platform is all about. Speaking of which, $800 is way above the mark, even for resell markup. You can get one all day for 500 on eBay. But don't buy one at all unless it's $350, get a V2 and call it a day.

The retail price is $349.00.

If you see a higher price, be very, very careful if considering a purchase. You will not be buying from Amazon, Nintendo, or a legitimate reseller. These higher priced units were purchased when normal retail stocks were available, and are being "flipped" or resold at a profit since the regular channels are out of stock. These suppliers are hoping that you will be so desperate to get one, that you're willing to spend extra $$$$ and get one now, rather than simply wait until the regular retail channels restock. You might get a new unit, you might not. You might get one covered by the manufacturers warranty, you might not. Simply put, it's a real gamble on your part.

Best to just wait. You'll get a legitimate one eventually, from an authorized reseller, new with a warranty.

Can this play on an external monitor which is oled?

To the guy who said there's "no performance difference". Absolutely false. I've played many games side by side with my kid who has a newer OLED, and the load times and performance are noticeably better on his.
Is it a huge difference? No.
Is it enough to notice? Yes.

I’m very glad I was able to find one last night. Sponsored 5 unfortunate children for Christmas, one of which had “money or Nintendo switch” listed as his wish. Ended up having to pay almost $500 for it, but I’m sure it will be worth it. Wish I could be there to see the kiddos face/reaction when he opens it!
