This feeder is used with bark butter or zick"s dough or any similar home made suet (or lard) & peanut butter with corn meal,oats & such- blend . It's a simple design & very effective. The birds Love it. It has only two perches at the bottom so when I hang it within a shrub I do my best to position it with branches the birds can use to reach the upper sections. I'm always conscious of the danger posed by greased feathers so I make mix on the drier side even if it is harder to spread. It ain't that hard-a good trowel is a good choice for this. I'll admit it was smaller than I expected but that does make it easier to hang within those shrubs. Where I am we have Coopers & Sharpshinned hawks that will visit every now & then.I understand a hawk has to eat & I can't begrudge them their meal cause they never get greedy. If they get too many of my favorites ( more than 1, or one ) I might have to take down the feeders for a week or so till they move along. Plus they are gorgeous birds who will, if not harassed, sit for a spell & keep an eye on me as I watch them. This is a small business .Their product will last me for years. It took the birds two days to start using it. It is all natural materials. Did I mention the birds like it? My birds prefer the suet feeder over the peanut butter. I have never seen a bird feed on the peanut butter. That may just be because the squirrels quickly monopolize this feeder. They lick every speck of peanut butter off the board in just a couple of hours. Every morning they are looking for this feeder to get their peanut butter fix! I buy a 2 1/2 lb jar of crunchy peanut butter from Walmart for under $3.00 & it will last approximately a month if I only coat one side of the feeder once a day with peanut butter. I was afraid that the squirrels would chew up the wood, but once they lick off all the peanut butter they leave it alone. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ now it's their favorite feeder *by T***S on Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2018* Took the chickadees a week to try it, but now it's their favorite feeder.
