If you are joining the rails together and only bracing across the 2-4' rails at the ends, I'd say no. You should have some sort of cross brace every foot. Both ends and two somewhere in the middle, would make for a strong 4' rail. I have not seen any rails that long, with just bracing. At the endsDaveMount Joy, PA

No they are not, I would say 3/4 inch deep.
