Thirty years after its debut, DC Comics is proud to present the definitive Absolute Edition of this modern comics classic. Together with a wealth of behind-the-scenes material from its creators—including the complete scripts and pencil breakdowns for all four issues—ABSOLUTE BATMAN: YEAR ONE offers two distinct versions of the legendary story: Book One features the acclaimed single-volume graphic novel edition with every page newly rescanned and remastered by Mazzucchelli and Lewis from their original boards, while Book Two features the never-before-collected process color edition of the original newsprint comics, sourced from all-new scans made by Mazzucchelli and Lewis from their personal copies of BATMAN #404-407. Originally published over four issues of the monthly BATMAN title in 1986 and 1987, BATMAN: YEAR ONE has gone on to become one of the most popular and influential graphic novels in the history of American comics. Written by Frank Miller and illustrated by David Mazzucchelli with colors by Richmond Lewis, this masterful reimagination of Bruce Wayne’s first year as the Dark Knight Detective has electrified generations of readers with its unprecedented fusion of gritty realism and elegance of form.
Gran gran regalo.

An Odd Creature (of the Night)
This is an odd creature. Year One, by itself, is not enough to justify the Absolute treatment. So they give you two versions in two volumes. First is the recolored version that is probably most familiar to readers, since it's the version that's been in every collected edition to date. It's printed on nice matte paper and it looks great. The cover art is the original hardcover art, and you get a lot of related art in the back, along with the Who's Who on Commissioner Gordon and the original ads for the story. The second volume is a scan of the original comic, printed on the original media (glossy pages for the covers, newsprint for the interiors). It has the original coloring, and this is different enough from the recolor to be interesting. An example: In the original, Bruce Wayne's face is covered in mud when he gives James back to Lieutenant Gordon. In the recolor, his face is clean. This affects how the reader interprets Gordon's assertion that he's blind without his glasses. It's a lot more believable in the original version, and I like the ambiguity. In the recolor, it's more of an obvious white lie. You also get the letter columns with contemporary responses to Year One as it was published, the roughs, and the script. The roughs and script pages are printed at 1/4 size, and at least one script page is the wrong one--I tweeted DC to ask if this has been corrected in later printings, but they have not responded. You don't get the original ads, but some of them have bled onto the scans so you can kind of make them out. Physically, the books have most of the usual Absolute features--hardcover, Smyth sewn, slipcover. The paper is not the glossy stuff I'm used to, but I'm okay with that. The first volume is bound in the original hardcover cover art, and the second volume has reproductions of the covers of the first and fourth issues. (All four covers are reproduced inside.) The slipcase has the Warner Books TPB art on one side, and the words "Year One" on the other. I guess it's appropriately minimalistic, but I think they could've found appropriate artwork for the other side of the slipcover. I would've gone with the splash page from issue four. Is it worth $80+? [Edit: The price dropped $30 in the price since I watched it. It's much easier to recommend now.] Unless you are a big fan of Year One, probably not. You're paying for the larger format, the original coloring, the newsprint, and the script. You can get a nice hardcover for $20, and the original comics for around $40, and you'll have most of the Absolute material in a smaller form factor. I think this is the only place you can find the script, but I found a pretty blatant error on the first page so I don't have faith they handled it very well. The strange thing is, I don't feel bad about this purchase. I find myself taking both versions out of the slipcover and flipping through them from time to time. If they fixed the script and reduced the price a bit, this would be a five star product.

Bellissima edizione!

Year One

Abdolutely Perfect
It arrived early and in mint condition. I can see why the price dropped on this book, as it's a reprint of a story that ran in 4 regular sized comic books (22 pages each - for 88 pages total) which isn't a huge Absolute edition. That being said, this is an awesome story that I've read many times. It's neat to read this then read the Dark Knight Returns, which bookends the Batman mythos. Although it's a short story this printing is superb. Reprinting the actual comics in a second separate book (both are included inside the same slipcase) seemed unnecessary, but DC had to justify the price tag I suppose. All in all, a great story in a great format. I'm glad this is finally part of my collection.
