For Krylon Satin Finish it's closer to matte, but does have a very very faint gloss to it. I use it to coat my stickers. **Q: does this fixative work on charcoal?** A: Why yes it does! That's what I've been using this fixative for and my charcoal drawings have all remained pristine. **Q: good for watercolor paintings?** A: Hello S. Tankersley, if you are looking to rework an area of the painting, I would not use the workable fixative as it is mainly for smudging types of media like pencil, charcoal, pastel etc. Alhough, you can always experiment. If you are desiring to seal the work, Golden makes an archival varnish in Matte, Satin, and Gloss that is archival and designed to protect delicate works like watercolor. The ink smudged before sealing the tiles and were smudge-free after using this product. Gesso does not spray well using an air brush because it’s thick but it sprays perfectly from this Krylon can. I needed it to be applied by spray because I wanted to eliminate brush strokes in the gesso, which happens when I apply gesso with a brush.
