Review: Worth every penny. Buy it once, use it for years - I'll be honest, the price of a Thermapen makes you wince when you're used to seeing thermometers for a fiver. But I'm writing this as someone who abused the previous model for years — dropped it in boiling wort, left it out in the rain, generally treated it appallingly — and it just kept going. I only replaced it because the fold-out probe wasn't activating cleanly anymore — you're supposed to flip it open and it powers on automatically, but I was having to wiggle it repeatedly to get a reading. Probably years of gunge worked into the mechanism. Not ideal when you need a quick temperature mid-brew. The old one still worked, mind you. This new model is a step up in every way. The reading speed is phenomenal — practically instant — and the auto-rotating backlit display is a genuinely useful upgrade rather than a gimmick. The battery cover has been properly re-engineered too. The old coin-slot design was getting mangled after years of use, whereas this one feels far more robust with silicone gaskets for extra protection. I use mine constantly for brewing, distilling, sourdough baking, and any time I'm making jam, chutney, or toffee — anything where hitting the right temperature is the difference between success and a sticky mess. I don't think I could do any of these to the same standard without it. It's also proudly British-made, which matters to me. Yes, it's a lot for a thermometer. But it's a precision instrument that'll outlast a drawer full of cheap alternatives, and it's a pleasure to use every single time. Every kitchen should have one, and any baker or brewer would be thrilled to receive one as a gift.

A: No but, it is very easy to read when in the food.

**Q: Does it have a magnet at the back? (for storing)**
A: No magnetic
 But it is great

**Q: Can it be used in a halogen oven?**
A: You don’t use it in the oven. You stick it in the food to test the temperature.

**Q: Can the Thermapen be used for checking fridge and freezer temperatures too?**
A: Fridges, and freezers yes but you would need a substrate as it isn’t an air thermometer.  It’s accurate enough to pop it in water and I know some businesses that use a tub of jelly to stick the probe in. In the freezer you can stick the probe between packs. But I would generally recommend a specific contact probe for freezers or infrared probe for freezer temperatures
