But with some further reading convinced me to grab one for myself. First, my soil is sandy loam sitting on top of that good ole Blackland Prairie black gumbo clay that I have been trying to amend for years. I took 10 samples yesterday from my 6000 SQ FT yard, quickly and easily. Honestly, I didn't find the dowel that useful, however since the handle comes out of the body and its outside diameter is slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the tool body at the taper, it works fantastically to push the soil out the top of the toolI wasn't interested in keeping and reviewing striations, but I see no reason why the same process with a bit more gentleness wouldn't work.Storage is easy and compact, the handle goes in the tool body, little tape on both ends, and off into the small yard tools bin it goes. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Flawless *by on Reviewed in the United States February 16, 2026* Works really well. I have sandy loam soil and even then the soil wants to stay in the tube. Luckily the handle is quickly removed and a wooden dowel is provided to push the soil out. The edges of the metal are sharp so be sure to wear gardening gloves.
