## Description

Learning Resources Wooden Cuisenaire Rods Small Group Set provides a hands-on way to teach fractions, measurement, counting, number relationships, and other foundational math concepts. The set includes 155 durable wooden rods in 10 color-coded lengths, ranging from 1 cm to 10 cm, allowing students to visualize abstract mathematical ideas through concrete models. Children can compare lengths, represent fractions, explore addition and subtraction, investigate patterns, and develop problem-solving strategies while actively engaging with the materials. Designed for small-group learning, the set contains enough rods for 4-6 students to use at once, making it ideal for classrooms, math centers, intervention groups, homeschool lessons, and collaborative activities. The color-coded design helps students quickly identify values and build mathematical understanding through exploration and discovery. Complete with a convenient storage bucket, this manipulative set is a valuable resource for supporting Common Core skills and hands-on math learning for grades Pre-K+ and ages 5+.

Review: Cuisenaire Rods: Excellent math materials for modeling numbers, number relationships, area, volume, word problems, & even music! - I highly recommend that you buy the wooden Cuisenaire rods. The precision of the lengths is better than the plastic ones. This particular set is beautifully made and comes in a clear plastic container. The assortment is a good one for multiple uses of the rods. I bought a second container for tutoring once I saw the quality. This basic set was later developed into the Dienes Blocks, also called base ten blocks, wherein the color pattern continues using the white one rod and the orange ten rod. I recommend buying base ten blocks that build on this color system to make understanding the relations among numbers more easy. If Cuisenaire rods are new to you, you are in for a treat. As a modeling tool for arithmetic, they are beyond compare. When using them to represent the numbers one to ten, children see and feel relative length and learn measurement in centimeters. Instead of the flawed flashcard method for memorizing facts, lining up the rods beside a meter stick shows the learner exactly what 5+3 or 3+5 looks like. For multiplication, the rods are extremely valuable for showing that eight yellow rods is not the same situation as five brown rods though they are the same total length (8x5=5x8). Beyond this, the rods can represent fractional parts and are useful for making models for area and volume. On YouTube there is a remarkable video of Gaetagno working with Montreal first graders in 1963 that begins to show how Cuisenaire rods can encourage high level thinking in very young children. The Miquon books are helpful resources for using these rods. For those of you who work with the Singapore block diagrams or the Math Playground Thinking Blocks activities, the Cuisenaire rods are invaluable aids for representing word problems. Music teachers can use the rods in measure groups to "annotate" simple rhythm patterns brilliantly. Strongest recommendation.
Review: My favorite set of Cuisenaire Rods and here's why. - This is my favorite set of Cuisenaire Rods available in the US. I like that they are wood (not plastic) and do not have the delineation lines for the ones, which is important for dyscalculic students gaining a sense of number and quantity. They are also the perfect size, at 155 pieces to work with one student and a tutor/teacher. Smaller sets than this don't allow enough pieces to adequately play games and do math activities with one student. I highly recommend this Small Group Set of Cuisenaire Rods from Learning Resources!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this realistically for 4-6 students, or would 4 kids work better with two containers of rods? Does age or math level make a difference?**
A: I would get a much larger set for 4-6 students. I use this small group set for one child. I would recommend at least 3 sets for 4-6 children. As math level advances, having more 10 rods (the orange ones) is useful.

**Q: What is the modular size? i.e. what is the cubic size of the smallest piece - the 'one' unit. Is it 1x1x1 cm or larger?**
A: The white cube is 1cm x 1cm x 1cm in this set. The wooden ones are preferable because the tiny extrusion nub on the plastic ones can make an increasing measurement error over the length of a model. I cannot recommend Cuisenaire rods more highly for their ability to make a colorful, tactile, and visual model for length, volume, and relative size. Metric measurement is the international standard and it allows children (and curious adults) the opportunity to understand both length and place value (powers of 10 for starters). American kids are left in confusion by two systems, one which is frankly antiquated and the other which is consistent and which interrelates length, mass, and volume. Metric should be the only system we teach if we want our students to achieve at high levels in math and science. Buy sets two to really use them flexibly. Also purchase one or two of the gray plastic Cuisenaire meter tracks and a wooden meter stick with mm markings. The tracks are fantastic for learning multiplication facts. On YouTube watch "Math at Your Fingertips" the Gattegno 1961 film of first graders using Cuisenaire rods to solve math problems well beyond expectations.

**Q: How many children can use this set at the same time?**
A: Depends on what you’re doing. If you are homeschooling children of different ages you can most likely get by with 1 set. Otherwise I’d say 1 per child.

**Q: Are the paints non-toxic?**
A: Yes, all of our paints and products are non-toxic and safety tested.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ These inspired my daughter to enjoy math finally!
*by C***W on May 12, 2025*

These blocks have inspired my 7 year old to enjoy math finally! We were really struggling to keep her engaged with math and doing her homework was torture! A math teacher friend of ours recommended these to keep things fun and to create a different approach to learning math. She has been loving it! Really recommend these to anyone, any age, struggling with math!
