For that reason, I sometimes use the Kindle's option to download and review a "sample" before purchasing, and consider that a helpful precaution. Especially since it appears to me that sometimes there are even more than one Kindle version of an older book, and they may not look the same.I don't recall if I sampled this book first, but I am pleased with the version I received. I am having no trouble reading and using it, and am very glad to have it. Containing both biographical pages and a large number of annotated games, as a Marshall fan I am pleased to have this readily available on my Kindle. Indeed it seems to me like a real bargain.The old fashioned descriptive notation (as opposed to algebraic) might bother some, but if it was good enough for Frank Marshall I am hardly going to guibble about it. I find interesting both Marshall's life and his play, and am happy to give this relatively inexpensive Kindle edition two big thumbs up. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Classic Reissue *by S***D on Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2014* This seems to be a replicate of the Dover edition of this book which I got about 45 years ago. The openings and middle game play are basically unsophisticated and lively. Marshall came on the chess scene about 1900, and may have peaked in the years 1905 - 1920. The last game in the book, from 1942, is a nice win in an exhibition match against former World Champion E. Lasker. Marshall was a terrible match player because his opening repertoire allowed a top master to play passively and solidly an wait for Marshall to overreach. He was always interested in the combat, not the accumulation of many small advantages. His successes in tournament play would have been even more impressive if he had taken more care in his career to draw a few games rather than embark on unsound attack simply because otherwise the game would be drawn! (These are of course not presented in Marshall's book.) For players who like combinative games with sacrifices, these are for you. Annotated and narrated by Marshall himself, the book outlines his life story, from a loss as a teenager to World Champion Steinitz to his solid victories over Lasker, Tarrasch, Capablanca and other top masters of the period.
