I did not end up installing them, however, I believe the lock tab is there to keep them secured to the cabinet. With the lock tab engaged, you cannot pull them out of the holes.

Recently bought some of these brackets as wall cupboards in my kitchen started lean away from the wall. The original brackets, fitted 10 years ago had failed. These replacement brackets are strong & sturdy so ordered more to replace the brackets on another wall unit before the original brackets fail
