Can these containers be used with produce that has alreadybeen washed?

Has anyone used these for non-refrigerated veggies like tomatoes or onions. I'm trying to avoid the inevitable fruit flies, will these help stop them?

Why are there so many comments not to wash produce and it doesn't say that anywhere on the box? Why the contradicting instructions?
