I would follow the directions that's on the can.. They also have a phone number that if you really need more information, call them. That's exactly what I did.

This answer is for anyone with a pet that gets fleas: Get a flea collar - any will do. Put it in the cannister of your vacuum cleaner! Vacuum EVERY day, for at least two weeks, then regularly. It will help get rid of fleas, and you don't have to take a chance with a flea collar on the cat. This advice was given to us by our vet, and it works. We still have to treat our cat every year or so, she's an animal and does get some fleas, but it will help keep your carpets and floors clear. You just have to keep up with vacuuming every day, to kill the larvae as they go through their stages. Best of luck!

My cat licked it off and got sick. She started drooling and she was very lethargic for days. How am I supposed to keep her from grooming herself?

Only put it on her upper body not lower body. And spray a rag or paper towel and rub it on her. Give her something to eat right after you do all this so she won't be licking herself for a while after that. If she drinks milk give her some will help to wear she might not give sick from it if she does lick herself.
