I purchased the 5 fan value pack, these are listed as 4 pin, but are really 3 pin in a 4 pin configuration. That's power, ground and a PWM signal for fan control. They also have the 4 pin socket for daisy-chaining, but of course the vacant pin location will produce an unused socket. It's a straight-through connection since all the fans work on the same electrical design. Mine plugged right into the motherboard fan headers and are currently being speed-controlled by the system as I write this and they have remained matched with the other fans in terms of speed. Even under load my motherboard hasn't ever amped these to max, and my CPU has remained below 70C even under the heaviest loads. I have an ASUS motherboard if that helps.
