I bought these for my elderly parents in law during a power cut when they lost light, heating and cooking. Candles were too much of a fire hazard. Hopefully when they have another power cut these will help light each room. They have a compartment in the top to store the batteries when not needed which is very helpful and they close down to a very manageable size to store. They are metal and not plastic and so feel sturdy when unscrewing the battery compartment etc. I liked them so much I have ordered some for myself and now my mother wants some too.

I bought a four-pack of these Etekcity lanterns years ago and I love them. In fact I returned here today to purchase some more of them for a couple of my relatives. I have used mine for power outages due to severe winter weather and thunderstorms and these lights performed beautifully and illuminated the entire downstairs. One of my neighbors actually came over and asked if my electricity had somehow been restored and of course I said no, and that I have these awesome lanterns that throw a surprisingly amount of nice white light. He thought I had somehow had my power restored or that maybe I had a generator running because my downstairs looked so bright. He was so impressed that he ordered a four-pack of them too. I particularly like that the hue of these lanterns is a "cool white" which is a very white light; not that awful yellowish tint which I cannot stand. These are a nice white light similar to a fluorescent light. I'm pleased that these little lanterns throw a lot of white light. And the batteries will last quite a while too. I ran one of mine as a test for close to 50 hours non stop to see how long the batteries would last. I have Eneloop high capacity rechargeable batteries installed in mine and it works out very well as those are a very low self discharge type of battery and they hold their charge extremely well. LED's don't use a lot of "juice" so you'll get a lot of bang for your buck with these lanterns. You certainly cannot beat the price of them. This review is for the CL30 4-pack. These lanterns have an excellent overall quality. As soon as I received them I tested all four, and the light output is incredible-- more than sufficient to light a 12 foot by 16 foot room with a single lantern from my testing. That said, the dimmer switch is helpful because the light output is beyond what is necessary for walking with it in hand. The construction of the lanterns feels sturdy and durable. The handles click in to place when not in use with and hold the lantern securely closed so that no battery power is wasted. The lid to the fire starter compartment also fastens securely closed with a click, and the battery compartment lid can be rotated until its very snug and water-tight. The included fire starter with each lantern has a clever, compact design wherein the scraper can be screwed in to the rod's container to give more leverage when striking the ferrocerium rod. After reading up online and practicing with the fire starter I have found the most reliable method for creating sparks to be: -Scrape off the black coating on the rod to expose the silvery metal underneath -Hold the blade of the steel scraper perpendicular (90-degrees) to the rod's surface -Point the rod in the direction you want the sparks to fire -Quickly drag the scraper along the length of the rod Be aware that the black coating is to prevent oxidation/corrosion of the ferrocerium so be sure to store it in a dry area if you scrape it off, or hold off on scraping it until you need to start a fire. The only possible improvement could be slightly stronger magnets at the base, but I have still found the magnets to be just strong enough to hold the lantern sideways or upside down on most metal surfaces (even slightly curved ones like a stainless steel trash can) as long as the lantern isn't touched or blown on by the wind. Overall an excellent product and an exceptionally good deal for their current price ($28.99 for 4).

I purchased the Etekcity lantern for camping a few years ago and really liked it so this time I ordered 4 more with the magnetic base. I find these lanterns well made and easy to use. It is a excellent lantern and it is perfect for power outages, camping etc. and with a magnetic base it will be handy in the workshop too. I would highly recommend this product. I gave one to my neighbour who is a senior and he liked it, because it gives off more light than a conventional flashlight.
