AnyTone Mini Size Dual Band Transceiver Mobile Radio VHF/UHF Two Way Radio AT-779UV for Car Vehicle Black

This was a perfectly small mobile radio for a Mazda MX3. at 18w on UHF and using a 1/4 wave magmount, it does the job I wanted it to do for the local repeaters in the county. Audio out on the built-in speaker is very loud and can easily hear when driving on the open highway. Microphone element works well and did the simple mod (youtube video shows how to do this) to the opening from inside the microphone housing, to allow a more clear voice to go directly to the mic element. A couple friends who have heard firsthand how this radio performs, have since bought one as well. 3M VHB tape might be more than adequate to hold this up with the radio mounting bracket, but I still used the two mounting screws with it.

Arrived with all accessories to get it mounted and programmed. Actually very impressed with the size. It fit under my radio between the cubby in a 2016 RDX. Got on 2M calling within minutes of install and a good QSO. For a simple Mobile unit, this works great. Luckily my vehicle runs 14.3 Volts when on so it’s pushing out the marked power. Integrated speaker works great and is plenty loud while clear. Handheld mic provides all the functionality you need. It would be great if instructions provided a QR code to the actual CPS. The ones on the Anytone website did not read the radio but eventually I found the Radioddity DB-20 CPS is the one I needed.

Late review, but the summary is that I like this radio so much I now own two. They got a lot of things right with this radio. It will do ham bands and can be opened up to cover other services easily using the manufacturer supplied radio. Unlike a lot of Chinese radios, this one has a very large number of channels you can program into it. From memory I think it is 500 channels. Scan speed is quicker than many radios, it will do split PL tones no problem. It has a REAL volume control knob! The display is clear and easy to read, but is a bit bright at night (yes, you can turn it down but it's still pretty bright). Signal reports are good. If I remember correctly (i tested this a while ago), VHF was ~ 20W out, UHF ~ 18 watts out. It's much easier to program from the computer, and thankfully they give you a programming cable for it. Software is not the greatest, but it isn't the worse either. I don't know if Chirp yet supports this radio - it did not when I bought mine in early 2022.

I like this little radio. I did experience a little issue. It turns out that the ethernet style connector is a tad bit small. The programming cable fits snug, but the mic cable connector has some play in it - if I lift up on the cable, the mic works. But when I stopped lifting it up on the cable, it stopped working. I thought I'd share what worked for me in case anyone else experiences the issue. Rather than deal with a return / replacement from the manufacturer (assuming my fix holds up), I found that a couple small short strips of gorilla tape placed under the ethernet style connector's latch, *just* a bit back from near to the base of the latch, makes it snug, so that the connector lines seem to make full contact and connect the mic correctly. Chirp supports this model well, plus I tried out the PC software. Chirp makes it easier to pull in repeaters and such. Note that frequency step is 12.5K in VFO mode by default but can be changed via the "FUN" button's list of options (option 06). Oddly, I couldn't find the setting in either the Chirp or manufacturer CPS software - perhaps I missed it, but its trivial via option 06 from the radio's FUN button. Also note, if you set display to Channel, then VFO mode access is restricted. When Display -> Name mode VFO is once again accessible (V/M key or button). The two display options both show channel names, so I suspect this is intended behavior for whatever reason. Your issue with the mic, should you even encounter one, might well be something else, but this is what is working for me. The "tell" is looseness and if you can make it work by pulling up on the cable a bit. I'm going to keep a small strip of extra gorilla tape on the top to use in case the tape in place gets worn out of compressed too much for to remain snug. I have some black gorilla tape so it blends in and doesn't look hackish (the connector shroud hides the applied thin short strips - they can only be seen when the mic is disconnected. This is THE PERFECT EASY TO INSTALL Mobile Ham Radio !! It comes prewired with 12V DC ....Cigarette lighter . Its a super small, light unit...very easy to program via Chirp.... Speaker is very good but I chose to add an external speaker because I had a great spot for one. Unit is a decent power. 25 watts which for myself is perfect as my two main Repeaters are under 6 miles away so FULLLL QUIETING. Only one caveat... unit doesnt have an internal fan so if you do any prolonged TX it tends to run hot...but that is easily rectified by locating it in an open area OR on the few occasions I abuse the Repeater 😆 🤣 I run the lower AC of the Car. Product received had obviously been used. The hardware package was open, and some pieces (washers, etc.) were missing. The programming cable and mobile mount were also missing, and for some reason, there were a couple 15A automotive fuses in the box. I returned it within hours of receipt.

Great radio, but mic is too big for small portable operation. I bought it for my wife’s car for the small size, but she has no place for the very large mic. This radio is still in box new on shelf! Ka4eet
