Review: Growing roots with the Roku - This was the first streaming device I've ever tried so I can't compare to other devices. Also notable is that I've hadn't had cable service since 2011 ever since my dispute with Time Warner Cable. Incidentally, my building only has TWC as a provider so I had no choice but to live cable-free, and OTA antennas didn't pick up signal in my unit. With that being said, this device has successfully turned me into a vegetable of the couch variety. I almost regret getting one of these, as I've lived TV free for so many years and I'm on a mad dash to catch up to the last few years. But this review shouldn't be about me, it should be about the device, so here are my thoughts: Pros: 1) desertcart Prime had this on my doorstep 3 hours after placing the order. No additional charge. (A++) 2) Virtually plug-and-play, with the exemption of the initial setup. Once this is done, you can plug into any HDMI outlet around the house and it'll be plug and play hereafter. (A++) 3) Free trials of Showtime, HBO, Netflix, Hulu, desertcart Prime... (A++) 4) Zero lag in menus, zero lag while streaming 1080p (but to be fair, my home network is 75 mbps up and down). However, I noticed after running network speed apps that the Roku Stick caps at 24 mbps. This probably was done intentionally, as there is no lag or buffering. (A++) 5) The companion app for my phone works flawlessly, and really shines when needing to type to search, or even when signing up for new apps. Unfortunately, the app does not work during the initial setup, which is when the most typing is needed. Still a good app. (A++) 6) So far, there's so much content that I'm still overwhelmed. (A++) Cons 1) The supplied remote that connects to the Roku stick often disconnects. I've read that this is due to interference between the wifi band and the remote. (D-) 2) The batteries that came with the remote lasted about 3 weeks. I hope that the supplied batteries were just poor, and the new set I put in will last much longer. (C-) 3) Casting from PC to Roku... I have yet to figure this out. Instructions online make it seem simple enough, but so far, no success. (C+) That's about it so far. It's been about a month now, and I've started to grow roots into the couch, so I guess it's doing what it's supposed to. Again, I can't compare this with any other device out there, but I do know that it really can't get much better.
Review: Roku is consistently decent, rarely have problems - I have bought 2 of these streaming sticks in the past several years. They typically work great. Every once in a while (maybe once every 3 months) I'll have some weird issue, streaming seems to stop working or something else funky. I am not sure if it's my network or the service I'm using or what, but I restart the stick and everything works fine again. So clearly the device is not perfect, but compared to other devices I have used, the Roku streaming stick consistently works the best. Great picture. When you use it, you can tell it has the power to keep the interface moving smoothly (I had major issues with this on a bluray player once) and all the apps run with decent performance. One other drawback I ran into once was I had taken the device to a hotel or some place outside my house. When I came back home, the remote wasn't working right and I couldn't tell the stick to connect to my wireless network (I had set it to a different network while I was away from home). I couldn't figure out what to do to resolve the situation. I couldn't even use the phone app to resolve it because you can't connect to the Roku unless it's connected to your wifi which is the very problem I was trying to fix! Very frustrating. However, I later realized the batteries in the remote were dead. I replaced those and it started working again. If the remote ever does die, I'll probably have to do a factory reset on the device and reset it up using the phone. Then either I'd have to get a new remote or always use the phone but never switch networks. The remotes aren't cheap either. Maybe there some other way to resolve this potential issue, but I couldn't figure it out. That aside, the device is great. I can get it to work at my house, family's house, hotels, etc. It has a special method for you to connect to hotel wifi networks that have that special extra annoying login process (you use your phone to connect to the roku's built-in wifi network, then you use your phone to get through the hoops the hotel router throws at you). In conclusion, great device, especially for the price. I'd recommend it to anyone.
