what time of sprockets/wheels fit in the chain?

the gears fit in it. Saw a video of an FLL robotics team using an arm that used the chain here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6NaT6eoqwg

Lego haunted house elevator chain is too short. Not sure why. I followed all instructions. Are these links compatible?

Look at the piece close. It should have lego logo as well as a part number. It is tiny, but it is there. If its not, then I would return to the person you bought from. As for the Haunted house, I believe it takes extra links.

Are the sprockets the same as the gears?

No, Lego sprockets work with the large tread links. Chain links work with standard Lego gears (spur gears), like the ones in Amazon listing (ASIN) number B00U23VMTS.
