“This work empowers readers with theory, historical precedent, and practical information while encouraging everyone to ‘amplify other voices and disrupt patterns of inequity.’ Don’t pass on this singular resource.” — Library Journal Starred Review Extra Bold is the inclusive, practical, and informative (design) career guide for everyone! Part textbook, part comic book, zine, manifesto, survival guide, and self-help manual, Extra Bold is filled with stories and ideas that don't show up in other career books or design overviews. Both pragmatic and inquisitive, the book explores power structures in the workplace and how to navigate them. Interviews showcase people at different stages of their careers. Biographical sketches explore individuals marginalized by sexism, racism, and ableism. Practical guides cover everything from starting out to wage gaps, coming out at work, cover letters, mentoring, and more. Written collaboratively by design luminary Ellen Lupton ( Thinking with Type ) and a diverse team of designers coming to the profession from a range of backgrounds: Farah Kafei, Jennifer Tobias, Josh A. Halstead, Kaleena Sales, Leslie Xia, and Valentina Vergara. Original, handcrafted illustrations by Jennifer Tobias throughout bring warmth, humor, and narrative depth to the book. A NEW TAKE ON THE DESIGN CANON: Critical essays rethink design principles and practices through theories of feminism, anti-racism, inclusion, and nonbinary thinking. ADDS NEW VOICES: The book is packed with interviews, essays, typefaces, and projects from dozens of contributors with a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds, abilities, gender identities, and positions of economic and social privilege. FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS & PROFESSIONALS: This is an eye-opening and empowering resource for navigating a creative career today. It is for anyone in a creative field, from graphic design and type design to marketing and advertising, as well as anyone who works with creative teams. Review: Ellen Lupton RULES! - Enjoy all her books. Easy reading, enjoyable. This was especially good for my college students. The short essays had depth and breath. Very helpful for anyone interested in learning about the topics. Review: Very informative articles over here

political correctness with superb design.
I loved the collective nature of this very BOLD book. It reads like some of the most important feminist tracts of the 70's but is enhanced by splendid design features.

Relevant for readers beyond graphic designers
I'm not a graphic designer, but I do work with creative teams and I'm interested in their field. I bought this book to learn how I can better weave inclusive language and design elements into my campaigns, but I got so much more out of it than I expected. This also covers a lot of historical material, and the data visualization helps to break things down. These are educational snippets, however, not lessons. Use this as a starting point to research more of the theories, issues, and historical figures. I originally read this as a library book, but liked it so much I wanted to be sure the writers were compensated so I came here to purchase it and help support their work. I hope to see more books like this being published!

Extra small
Small text size makes this a challenge to read. Ideas and info presented are very timely for the youngest generation of creative minds.

Dense, but essential reading for any designer looking to be a good ally for oppressed groups
This book is full of nuggets of wisdom that help a cisgender white male designer like myself be a good ally for traditionally overlooked and oppressed groups of people. I NEVER even thought about how my work affects the deaf or otherwise physically disabled til I read this book. It's a tough read and I don't recommend doing it all in one swoop. It's more like a collection of really poignant articles that are best digested one by one and SLOWLY. It's going to be a valuable resource for many designers in years to come.

Textos corajosos, humanos e atuais

Looks used.
I bought this for a gift, and unfortunately it is not in the best of conditions. The cover is all marked/scratched up, the side is ruined, looks like it was used and returned. I definitely will not be gifting this and will be returning it.

Proteção
Podia ter vindo melhor embalado, acabei danificando a capa por acidente na hora de abrir a caixa, mas fora isso o livro parece fantástico.
