Is it fun for a 12 yr old?

If your 12 year old is really into science experiments, I think so. I am using it with my 6 and 7 year old. We have done half the experiments and they love them!!!! Would do them all, one after the other if I had the energy. :-)

I know it’s recommended for ages 8+, but would a 7yo understand and enjoy this?

Yes definitely- but plenty of parental involvement is needed to understand the experiments. And be gentle with the equipment, it breaks easily. But the company is great about replacing parts free of charge.
