Can these be used to cook indoors on camp stove during power outages?

Technically, sure. However, Esbit fuel is amazing because it provides a lot of heat for not very much weight-- it's ideal for backpacking and the like, where weight as a premium. Additionally, esbit smells pretty bad, so I'd not advise it indoors unless you have to. Plus, to make a big meal for a family would take many tablets. For emergency camp stove cooking, I'd suggest a 2 burner Primus stove that uses small cylinders of propane. If you don't need to carry the fuel, just store it in the basement? Go with propane. No unpleasant smell, and much greater heat output allowing for a much easier large meal.

how long do they burn

At 4800 feet altitude in still air, my 4 gram cubes burned about 4 minutes each. I timed one at 4 minutes, 6 seconds.

Would it be possible to ignite one of these with a fire steel/fire starter?

Yes it is possible, I have done it. What you need to do is break off a piece of a corner, smoosh it into a powder (which takes very little effort) than train your sparks onto the powder. After the powder ignites, hold the cube over the flame. The powder led substance only burns for a few seconds so you have to be quick.

Better than trioxane?

Haven't used trioxane, but I was able to start a campfire with it no issues at all, burns hot and long enough for it.
