Neem oil is a brilliant, naturally derived pesticide among a host of other uses. It has a very distinctive smell - a cross between garlic and stale oil used for frying chicken. It takes some getting used to, especially if used for skin or scalp care. I make something I call a 'pesticide for people, plant, and pets', using Neem oil, essential oils of peppermint, lavender, and tea tree. To keep my plants pest free - I put about a pint of water into a spray bottle, add 15-20 drops of essential oils, 1 teaspoon of organic soap, and 1-2 teaspoons of Neem Oil. The oil tends to sit on top of the solution, so be sure to shake the spray bottle before use. Neem Oil will kill beneficial AND nuisance insects. In my garden, I use it after the sun has gone down, and when beneficial insects such as butterflies and bees have left for the evening. This limits the impact to beneficial insects, and because this brilliant oil breaks down relatively quickly, by the time they come around next morning the sprayed plants will not be toxic to them. (Be sure to also spray the undersides of your plants' leaves.) I also use Neem Oil in a homemade salve for blemishes, I put a little in my skin lotion, and sometimes in my shower gel. I use it on my scalp, and it seems to have made a huge difference with my dry scalp/dandruff. I rub a little mixed with olive oil on my shins when I'm sitting out on the porch at night - to keep the mosquitos away, and I mix it with body oil and rub onto my feet to keep them soft. The smell is quite something, but essential oils help, and after a while you get used to it. I purchased this for a myriad of uses around my home, both for me as a human, for my pets, and for household applications. I want to be clear on something before I continue this review... the smell of this neem oil is AWFUL. It smells like onions drenched in peanut butter. Other reviewers, and the manufacturer, state that the scent is “earthy.” I can do earthy. No one mentioned that it smells like carmelized peanut butter onions. Bleh. It’s something I’ve gotten used to, as I’ve also attempted to mask it. Perfume works. Tea tree oil works. Overall, the smell is just really unpleasant, so keep that in mind. Personal applications: I am in my late 20s and blessed with adult acne. It’s one of the many great benefits of adulthood. I have combination skin on my face and my chest breaks out despite wearing cotton clothing. This has led to scarring. My first motive in purchasing neem oil was to apply it to my skin as I’ve read it is an antibacterial and helps with skin healing. I mix a small amount with moisturizer for my face, and lotion for my body. I’ve noticed that my acne has decreased in redness and the scars look less mangled. I haven’t been using it for all that long but I’m pleased with the results so far. It also leaves my skin extremely soft and glowy. Bonus. Pet applications: I have three dogs and try to utilize natural remedies for them as much as possible. One of my dogs has redness/irritation under her collar because she is a bulldog with extra fatty skin. I’ve applied the neem oil to the area and removed her collar when we’re inside. The neem reduced redness and her skin seems to be healing. I also read online that neem oil mixed with water in a spray bottle is useful for keeping away fleas and other pests. It’s winter right now so I can’t comment on that yet, but I’ll be trying the method of spraying my dogs down come spring time. Household applications: I live in South Carolina and apparently the ants here are mutant. What I mean is, nothing kills them. They are immune. They have also infiltrated my master bathroom. I woke up one morning and my ceiling was covered in a moving mass of ants. I did what any other logical person would do — closed the bathroom door and hoped they would go away. No. They did not. So once my neem oil arrived, I mixed about a tablespoon of oil, 10 drops of tea tree oil, and water in a spray bottle and super-soaked the ants. I’ve been doing this multiple times per day, particularly in cracks in the floor where it meets the wall, along the ceiling, and basically the entire perimeter of the bathroom. The ants have diminished in numbers by about 99%. There are still some brave ones that insist on trekking through my bathroom, which I spray individually after warning them. Neem’s strong smell mixed with tea tree apparently is unpleasant for ants. I’m hoping that this method continues to work and I don’t have to call an exterminator, because again, I’m trying to be “all natural.” I’ll update this review should I come up with any other uses for the neem oil, or if I see results that are worth sharing other than the aforementioned ones. I used to use neem oil as a spot treatment for my acne about three years ago and then stopped using it for a couple of reasons. First of all, the smell. Yes, the infamous smell of neem oil ALMOST makes it not worth using. And don't think that you're the only one who can smell it. I would describe the smell as rancid burnt peanut butter. I believe it's how STRONG the smell is more than the smell itself. You can't, and shouldn't, apply this to your face and think you can go out and have a normal day. People WILL smell you, and people WILL avoid you. Point blank, it doesn't smell good. There are some people who CANNOT use this product because of the smell. For me, I got used to it and didn't mind it so much after several uses. However, when, after 3 years, I decided to use neem oil again, the first night I used it, the smell was so awful and overpowering that I had to wash it off my face completely. It's a process, and you will absolutely hate it the first time you use it. But hopefully get used to it enough to enjoy the benefits. Second of all, because of the smell, I only applied this at a time when I didn't have to leave the house, AKA before bed, making it a little inconvenient to use when you want to. If you apply it before bed make sure you give it enough time to soak in before laying on your pillow, as it will rub off and stain your pillow. And the yellow color of this oil is not something you'd like to have on your pillowcases and try to explain to other people. Now that I've talked about the cons, let's talk about the pros. This is an AMAZING spot treatment for acne and pimples. I pour about a dime size amount of oil on a cotton ball and apply it to my whole face, not just the places I have acne. This stuff works WONDERS over night and basically zaps and shrinks your pimples to where they will be gone in another day. If you have dry skin, even better. I have very dry skin and use makeup products that are drying enough for me to have to use a moisturizer every night. However, on nights that I apply neem oil after washing my face, I do not need moisturizer. The other great thing about neem oil is that there is no such thing as too much. So if you're like me and want to do everything possible to get that pimple to go away, slather on the neem oil 5-6 times a day with no adverse affects. When I bought and used neem oil three years ago, I bought the Coastal Scents brand that is also available on Amazon. When I decided to try out neem oil again about a month ago, I went with this brand as the packaging is more attractive in the darker bottle. The clear coastal scents bottle is almost as unattactive as the smell of this stuff. HOWEVER, the lid on this product must be defective as I can't for the life of me keep it from being a greasy mess after pouring it. I have to wipe it down after every time I use it, and even that doesn't completely get rid of it. I may see how much it annoys me until I finish the bottle, and then decide if I go back to the coastal scents brand.

This is some strong aromatic stuff. It pretty much smells like strong baked dry peanut skin, with a light garlicly smell. Not so much as god awful: if you can stand smelling distilled vinegar for long periods of time (that stuff is way stronger) you should be ok with this.You just need a bit of getting used to. The smell aside, I've read this is some powerful panacea for every skin trouble you can ever run into: antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflamatory, deep relaxing warmth smothering oil, bug/insect repellent ( mosquito is all I cared for ), pain reliever, anti itch, powerful emollient ( extremely hydration that get's into the cracks of the driest skin ). I just took a hot shower and slap some neem oil mix on, and I could literally just fall asleep on my chair because I'm feeling so deeply relaxed. I actually got this for my eczema, and so far I'm very pleased with the effects I'm feeling. It immediately calmed down the itch, the dry, the red for a good 4 some hours before I need to reapply more on my skin. Need a few days of testing to see if the rashes disappear though- I've just received the ordered item today. --Eczema Blisters Update-- OK. This is some miracle oil, INDEED! I've been really rubbing this stuff deeply on mixed with zinc oxide powder, on the soles of my foot daily (since I've got it) and so for I'm able to literally see a change for the best every morning I wake up. It dries up, scabs up wounds and open blisters, even for those spongy weeping tones (severe Eczema, a stage up from those tiny blisters) has nothing against Neem Oil. I generally don't see inflammation in the surrounding area anymore and I even find it satisfying to gently scrape off the dry dead patches to reveal normal skin. This even works better than those over the counter regular cortisone cream and equally as good as those high strength prescriptions one without getting the toxicity side effects from long term use. I'm expecting to see a full recovery in another 3 some days.

I bought this for a couple of reasons, I was looking for a treatment for extreme dry scalp and I had heard that it was a superior insect repellent. The black flies in my area are legendary, and if someone says they found something that keeps the filthy little bloodsuckers at bay; I'm game to try it. I was excited to try this oil and popped it open as soon as I got home. I sniffed the bottle and wasn't able to detect a strong scent at that point. The oil solidifies when the temp is under 70ish, so it was a pretty thick sludge in the bottle when I took it out of my car. After letting it come up to room temp it improved slightly, but I keep the house at 62 in the winter so it was still on the thicker side. I decided to try it as a hair mask and squeezed it directly onto my scalp near bedtime with the intention of leaving it on there for the night to work it's magic as I slept. This is where the fun began. I was massaging the first hearty squeeze into my scalp when an amazing and powerful WALL of stench hit my nostrils. My kids hopped up off of the couch and ran away, my dog got up and left the room after shooting me the dirtiest of looks. The smell. MY GOD THE SMELL. It smells like peanut butter, mixed with rotten onion, steeped in the sulfurous basement of hell and polished off with a sprinkle of garlic powder. I was determined to leave it on for the night and see the miraculous transformation that my scalp would undergo, the smell was proof that it was amazing, right? I tied a bandanna around my head, put a towel over my pillow and went to bed. Nightmares, all night. The human olfactory system possesses this amazing ability wherein the receptors in your nose sort of switch off,and the intensity of a smell starts to fade, because your brain has perceived the scent to be nonthreatening, which means there’s little need to pay close attention to it. Usually. This scent however is more powerful than the human olfactory/brain connection. So be prepared. Now, for my results. I got up the next morning and hopped into the shower to wash this off, after 3 shampoos I felt confident that it was gone. Not so. I smelled it all day, co-workers came into my office and remarked on my peculiar stench, it was a very determined aroma. BUT my scalp didn't itch. It took 3 days for the smell to leave me, but my scalp is feeling better. Is it worth it? I don't know at this point. I will say I am a person who is very sensitive to smells, and if you are too, make sure you cut this with an essential oil and a carrier oil as other reviewers have recommended. I still intend to try mixing this with a few to see if I can stomach it- I have a huge bottle after all, and my Yankee frugality won't let me do otherwise. It's the dead of winter now, so I have time to experiment before the black flies emerge around mid-may. I intend to try this as a bug repellent for my backpacking expeditions this spring, it sure works on kids and dogs so far! ;)
