The blue light or its absence indicates the status of the mic. If the blue light is lit the mic is open, people can hear what is said and when not lit the mic is closed. Because the mic switch has no moving parts touching the blue light (inside squarish ring) will open or close the mic. Without the light there would be no way of telling at a glance from looking at the mic its status. I think a betteroptio might have been a permanent light that was either red or or green depending on status.
