The old knife just wouldnt keep a sharp edge. I bought the Mercer 12 inch from desertcart just to cut boxes. In the event it isthe best knife of its type I have ever owned and I have a lot of expensive knives in the kitchen. The plastic handle is a little small for my hand (i'm a large man.) The edge it holds is truely unbelieveable. I resharpen half as often as any of my others and use it twice as often. If you need to cut a whole head of cabbage or a winter squash, this modestly priced knife will do it. I am looking forward to watermelon season. I have not had it long enough to comment on how it holds an edge but it was reasonably sharp on arrival; it arrived on time and in good condition. It is comfortable to hold and easy to clean.
