Solid Well Built Lock - Easy to Install and Program - Looks Great Too
Update March 2025 I am getting ready to buy another one of these locks to use on the house my son is renting from my ex wife, so I thought I would do a quick update for the one I purchased over seven years ago now - which is still operating flawlessly. I have codes setup for myself and both my children plus a backup/programming code that I keep in my my password file on my phone in case of emergencies and to reprogram the lock when necessary. I have replaced the four AA batteries two times since the lock was installed. The keypad shows zero signs of wear meaning you cannot see any wear pattern from pressing the pad to activate the lock. Even though the lock cost $50 more now, it's still worth the price in my mind. *************** I've waited to do this review until I have had some time to use the lock. I have had it installed since November 2017. I'm pretty handy so it was very easy to install. Although if you use the instructions it should be easy to install even for someone with basic handyman skills. The lock is very solid and well made and I suspect it will last a long time. The operation is very smooth. It's a little tricky to program, but not overly so. I know a lot of reviews mention the battery life. There are two main things that play into how long the batteries last. How well the dead bolt fits the opening in the frame and if you have it set to auto lock . To address the first point make sure the opening for the deadbolt is aligned properly during installation. Do not overlook this detail. The bolt needs to slide freely to prevent the lock from using more force, which requires more battery power, to move the bolt. Secondly, if you use the auto lock feature, the lock will operate about twice as often. The other issues with auto lock, and the reason I do not use it, is because if the door is left open and it locks, the deadbolt is left sticking out. So if you shut the door not realizing it's locked, the bolt hits the door frame which can damage the frame and over time I suspect the bolt as well. It would be much better if you could set the auto lock to function at a predetermined time to ensure it's locked before you retire for the evening. Not sure what that was not considered. I did not purchased a hub to use the software, but based on what I read, outside of being able to operate the door remotely, it does not do all that much. I would think you should be able to do some basic programming with the software like lock the door at a specific time of day or night. Doesn't seem worth the cost of a hub to me. Other than that, it's a great lock and looks good too.

Nice lock, works well, needs new batteries and close location to pair with Wink
I’m a bit OCD about making sure the door is locked before I leave home. My wife gets a good chuckle out of it, and is sometimes gets annoyed. What’s worse is getting somewhere and then worrying about whether or not you locked the door. Should you jump in your car to run back to check it? Are you just being paranoid? Can you enjoy whatever you’re doing without worry about your doors being unlocked? The Schlage Z-wave Camelot door lock eliminates those questions. The touch panel gives you a positive checkmark when the door locks, and if you’re out and about when you start worrying whether or not you’ve locked the door, just pull out your phone and check. If it’s not locked, simply slide it to the locked position and be assured that the command has been received and executed at home. The lock has a lot of great features. It can autolock after being open for 30 seconds. It has alarms for tamper and break-in with various sensitivity levels. You can use the open/close status in a Wink robot. You can assign different codes to different people. And you don’t have to worry about getting locked out of the house without your keys. Now, if only pairing with Wink were simple. In theory, it’s supposed to be. In reality, it can cause hours of frustration. If these tips had been spelled out, it would have been very helpful: - Move your Wink hub as close to the lock as possible when starting the pairing. I thought 10 feet line of sight would be fine, but it wasn’t. - Be sure you put brand new batteries in the lock when you start pairing. Don’t rely on the batteries that came with the lock, even if they’re brand new. I worked for a day and a half on one lock. It wouldn’t pair even with the Wink hub 18” from the lock. I finally used a DMM to check the battery voltage. It was 5.97, so I shrugged, thinking it was fine. Later, out of desperation, I decided to change the batteries. With new batteries, the voltage was 6.28, and the lock paired almost instantly. - The Schlage Z-wave relay doesn’t really improve the reception - The Wink app will often say it has paired with the lock, but the green checkmark on the lock doesn’t confirm the pairing. The Wink app is wrong—the lock isn’t paired. - Be sure to use the Z-wave exclude command to delete the lock upon an unsuccessful pairing. This came directly from the Wink help support line. They claimed the exclude feature is more complete at removing the prior failed pairing parameters. - When the lock finally successfully pairs, you may not see an accurate battery level indicator for many hours. This parameter took overnight to read correctly on both my locks. - When you are paired correctly, the locked status should show up in about 4-8 seconds in the Wink app after you’ve opened or closed the lock. Also, changing the lock’s settings, such as the security or number of digits for entry codes, should receive confirmation in the app within 10-20 seconds. - Note that you can’t run the locks through either the scheduler or robots, but you can include them in Wink shortcuts. Wink claims this is for security and safety consideration. - The activity report only shows when the lock has been opened with the Wink application, not when it’s been manually unlocked or when someone has entered with a code. This was quite surprising to me as it means there’s little point to the log. If you have a robot set up you will get a notification on your phone when the lock toggles, depending on what you request. Pros for the lock: - It’s easy to install. - No one has had problems learning how to enter their codes. - It seems quite sturdy and comes with a strike plate that certainly exceeded the security of my doorframe original equipment. - I think it looks great, though my wife thinks it makes the doors look like hotel doors. - The auto-lock feature wherein the lock shuts automatically in 30 seconds is appreciated. Just be sure your door is closed when the lock slams home. Now, some cons for the lock: - The lock only reports the deadbolt’s extended or retracted status. If the door is not closed, but the deadbolt is extended, the lock will say it’s closed. It would be great for the lock to actually sense whether it’s mated to the strike plate. - Using the button on the back to turn on and off the alarm or set the mode never worked very well for me. Maybe I just couldn’t get the hang of it from the instructions. The Wink app works much better to set the alarms. - The tamper alarm is very sensitive. I have the “bludgeon” (forced entry) mode activated. - The programming code for the lock is only 6 digits long, yet you can program in 8 digit entry codes. What’s the point of 8 digit entry codes when guessing the right programming code can get the burglar in the door? Come on, Schlage, the programming code should be 8 digits! - There’s a bit of a security risk since Wink could be hacked, but then again, it’s not hard to pick a lock if you know what you’re doing. Someone who really wants in will just break a window. All in all, I’m pleased with the locks. Update Sept 2015: My Wink hub was damaged by a transient caused by the power company and wouldn't connect to Wifi. There was no way to delete the existing devices from the old hub. Eventually, Wink deleted my account and let me start again with a new hub. I had to use the Z-wave Exclude function to delete this lock. You don't have to reset the lock to "factor condition." Just exclude the lock under the Hub's Z-wave commands, then use the inclusion mode to re-add. If you use the inclusion mode rather than the Add Lock command in the Wink app, you get Schlage specific options such as add users, set alarm types, etc. After initial protest, my wife loves the lock. It lets her get into the house without fumbling through her purse for her keys.

It just works
I had been looking for a keyless lock that I could connect to from my phone, and, after looking at the August locks, I decided to go with this one instead because the reviews indicated it was more reliable. In the 10 months I've had it, I have been entirely happy with the purchase and have encountered no problems operating the lock. Installation was fairly easy, and I had it all installed and working within an hour. On its own, it has been completely dependable--no malfunctions. While I do have the lock connected to a couple of different smart systems in my house, one thing I like about the lock is that it doesn't need to be connected to a smart home system to work: your key codes work as long as the unit has battery power (and it lets you know when you're getting low long before you actually run out of power), regardless of whether it's connected to your home system, and you can add and delete user codes right from the keypad. Given that a lot of smart home systems can be a little buggy, this makes me feel more confident that I'll always be able to get in and out of my house without needed to carry keys all the time. Shortly after I got this lock, I bought a Wink hub so that I could use the lock remotely, and that connection has been mostly stable: aside from a disastrous afternoon when I tried to switch the lock's connection from the Wink hub to an Almond+ router, the lock has only come disconnected from my hub once. Using Wink's smartphone app, I can add and delete user codes; I can see whether my door is locked or not; I can see an activity log of when it's been locked and unlocked and by whom; and I can create "robots" to notify me whenever a specific key code is used and to turn on the lights when people enter the house. While my Wink system sometimes struggles with my smart lights, it always works with this lock. The lock also works with Alexa, so I can ask Alexa whether the front door is locked when I'm in bed and forgot to check, and I can ask her to lock it if need be. Using Alexa and Wink, I can tell my home system that it's bedtime, and the lights will go out and the door will lock. It's all pretty convenient. Of all the elements of my smart home system, this Schlage lock has been hands-down my favorite and most dependable purchase. It has eliminated the need for me to carry a key every time I leave my house, it allows me to monitor who comes and goes to my home and when, and it allows me to give and revoke access to my home to anyone without giving out and taking back keys. I absolutely love it.

Great lock for automation with Z-Wave
Installation: Super easy to install in a standard deadbolt door. Evidently there are some ways you can run into issues with installation but this installed and was up and running in under an hour. I did some research and even bought the Schlage Sense by mistake when I thought it was this one. Unfortunately I had it re-keyed and installed it before realizing it was the wrong one. So I tried the Sense and Wifi adapter for a while and now have a better understanding of the difference. I now prefer the Connect for what was needed. The main difference between the Sense and Connect are integration with third party systems and other devices. I'll tell you a little bit about the difference from trying both. Rather than a quick summary I'm going to make you read the whole review so you understand the reasons behind it. Sense: Comes with Schlage software for your mobile device, you must create an account but it will do the basic lock/unlock with BlueTooth as well as manage codes, alarms, auto-lock and any other features on the lock. You can buy a plug-in Wi-Fi adapter so you can connect your home of business network to the BlueTooth radio on the device and remotely manage the lock. If you don't have a need to integrate with other home automation this is a very practical and easy to use smartlock solution. You don't need the Wi-Fi adapter if you are just using BlueTooth from your phone, and its often faster to just use the keys you already have in your hand from the car to open the door most of the time. This configuration is most useful for proving a unique door code for others you trust to get in to feed pets, etc. Connect: This lock has the same basic capabilities, in fact it is basically the same lock with a Wi-Fi adapter in place of the BlueTooth radio. The other difference is that Schlage provides no app to remotely manage the door codes, alarms or lock settings which is why it is 4 stars not 5. Although you don't have to buy a separate Wi-Fi adapter you do need to buy a hub that supports Z-Wave and find/configure software to operate the lock settings unless you want to stand outside in front of the lock and punch in codes which kind of defeats the purpose of remote lock management. My goal was home automation and integration with motion sensor doorbells, cameras, lights and other systems. I had picked up the SmartThings hub and some outlets and already had the Ring doorbell and floodlight cam. There are some basic built-in features that are quite useful such as being able to trigger other events on changes in door lock status, lock the door automatically when your phone goes out of range of the house, turn on a light when the door unlocks, etc. This can be integrated with some simple configuration available for free in apps that come with your automation hub and other smart devices and is most of what you need. Here comes the hard part. To manage the lock settings without standing in front of it, manual in one hand punching in codes every time, you will probably need to buy some software or go learn how to write, test and debug scripts in whatever the automation system uses. In the case of SmartThings, there is a community out there and your mileage may vary, I ended up spending < $40 on some device handler and device management scripts to solve it and then had some fairly simple instructions to follow to onboard it. Now I have fully integrated automation and remote lock management. The door locks in the evening at 10 and 12 if someone forgets to lock it. The door locks when any of our phones leave the area if we forgot to lock it. If someone jiggles the door when it is locked a light goes on and the door beeps, if we are away or at night it sends an alert and the tamper alarm goes off. We can add a door code from anywhere and set a schedule of when it will work from anywhere at anytime. We can answer the doorbell camera from anywhere and either let someone in one time or add a code for them on the spot. So yes it took some trial and error and time fiddling with it but now this system does about everything that was expected and a bit more, all from a smartphone except the setup needed one-time for the device handler and smart apps on the web sites.

Please read all of it,, its helpful
Hopefully schlage will contact me!! Batteries keep dying Installation took about an hour on an existing deadbolt. 5 stars on the ease and installation instructions Finish, appearance and fit 5 stars. Heavy quality, looks good fit existing holes perfectly Programming at the keypad 4 stars. Simple, instructions tell you where factory user codes and programming codes are and thru worked. Easy to add users, easy to turn on alarm function and other items. NOTE write down what function you change as there is no lookup of changed parameters you'd have to enter a function again and see if it was changed and in that case when you do it changes it back, if it wasn't the one you changed then you just changed it instead. Alarm features.. 2 stars.. It's easy to change and they do work BUT you can only have 1 of 4 options. Default no alarm sound, 2 beeps when door is opened, 3 alerts when tampered with and 4 alerts when heavy breaking in... You shouldn't have to change everytime you go to bed. I'd like an alert when family comes in BUT also the other alerts without changing to one of the other 2.. It was late when I installed but will test this some more and change review as needed. Phone app.. 0 stars. Documents and videos and internet searches reveals a lot of misconception.. This connect unit has NO native connection to an android phone app. It is NOT wifi or Bluetooth. So out of box it's a simple keypad entry with separate user codes and 1 key included. If you want to connect to Android you need a z wave hub and the corresponding app and then sync it with this lock. I've got a smartthings on its way. I was under impression that I could be home and unlock from phone sitting on couch but not in its native included form. I've got a lot of standalone wifi devices that do this but this one needs a hub. It doesn't connect to the SENSE APP. And there is no CONNECT APP. I'm guessing the sense version of this lock will do this BUT needs the wifi module to connect to a hub. Smartthings works ok, a little finicky. I don't have all the features on it, but I could if a restarted door and reset everything according to other people complaining of same. But for now, between Snartthings and ifttt its very good.. NOTE it's now 4/19 and batteries have expired and lock stopped working abruptly and without battery warning. Replaced batteries and again it says 100% and all is working so roughly 4+ months of high traffic use. NOTE AGAIN... DEAD BATTERIES AGAIN.. SOMETHING MUST BE WRONG

Perfect addition to your home and network- Works well with Vera and Alexa
Solid locking unit. Very easy to install with clear directions. Set up is straight forward, just make sure you do not misplace your paperwork including your programming code. Active/tamper/alarm settings are easy to use and a very nice feature. I originally was drawn to this unit for it's ability to connect over zwave. This is where my only issue was, and for a while had me wanting to return the unit. I have a veralite and pairing was a nightmare. After following the directions provided by Schlage and vera I was unable to pair for over a month. I went to forums, but no help there either. I ended up having to just keep unpairing and then pairing over and over. This is an important step, make sure you unpair before pairing. I literally had to do this upwards of 50 times. Each time giving it about 45 minutes- 2 hours, which was recommended from multiple sources due to the security keys being exchanged. Once it did start working however, I have had zero problems and over a month with 100% life still on batteries. Unit gets used about 4-6 times a day and 20+ when people come over to show it off. Despite the pairing issue, this lock is everything I could ask for. If you are interested in buying this unit, I would recommend you are patient and handy. The end result is totally worth it. Also, if you are buying with the zwave in mind, have your HUB unit already set up. I believe the concerns about the units going through so many batteries is due to the fact there is binding when the unit is trying to operate. You might have to make minor to major adjustments or modifications to your door set up to get rid or prevent this. If you are questioning whether you can handle this, I would check the door before ordering. If it binds and you lock doesn't move smoothly, then skip or get ready to hire a pro. If its pretty smooth and the door opens and closes fine, then you should be set. Update (1/19/18)- After having and using the unit of over a year, I still remain amazingly happy with the unit. It looks amazing on the front door and everyone wants to know about it when they come over. When out of town, I can add a neighbor or family member to the system to let the dogs out and be alerted to when the arrive and when they leave. Then when coming home, I can just turn off their code and I'm back to being secure. As far as batteries go, I'm still at 61% (according to my HUB information on the unit) on the original batteries. This unit has been nothing short of amazing since I got it paired and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another unit again. Now with Vera and Amazon playing nice out of Beta testing, it's been really nice to have this unit also be controlled and secured by voice command.

Love it! Fairly quick installation and it works great!
I had a friend install this so I can't say exactly how easy it was, but Schlage has installation videos on their website and my friend was able to answer the one question he had by watching it. I think it took him about 30 minutes to install this and a few more minutes to install the handle lever below it (separate product). He is a bit of an expert in building maintenance and security and recommended that I get a keyless lock that controlled the deadbolt, not the door handle, because it's harder to break if you're using force. So, I needed to purchase a separate non-locking door handle. Of course, this one has an alarm that will go off if anyone tries that. There are actually three alarm settings you can use, but I chose the alarm that just goes off when someone uses force because my condo is in a multi-unit building and I didn't want my alarm going off unnecessarily. Once installed, it was easy enough to use the supplied six-digit programming code to add my own codes and adjust the settings of the lock. I also plan on getting a Z-wave hub so that I can add and monitor codes from my phone. I occasionally create codes for guests and maintenance/cleaning people so it will be nice to know that I can monitor their usage. I can also delete them after they are no longer needed. I have a few things stolen in the past and I'm fairly positive it was by people I know so this will give me the peace of mind of knowing who I can trust. It really sucks that I have to do this, but living in fear is not fun. Once I have the hub, I'll expand my review to let you know how well that works. Also, it may be a small thing, but I really appreciate that this came with batteries. Good ones, at that. This is not the type of installation where you can leave your house during the process to go get batteries, so that was very appreciated. One thing, it is a bit loud when it locks. But at least you know it's locked. If you have teenagers, they won't be sneaking in and out with this lock at your front door ;) I've only had this installed for a few days so I can't say how well it works over time, but I'll update my review if anything changes or becomes an issue. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

A dead technology... RIP...
So I have had this deadbolt now for about 4 or 5 years. When it first came out it was amazing. I still love the built-in alarm if someone tries to kick in the door, and the stand-alone features that does not require WiFi/Internet/Hub, etc. This deadbolt transcends time even with it's technology... Nest/Yale Locks are better than this one - but that's IF you have internet. But this one does the job and continues to do so... even if there's no internet around. So it uses the Z-wave tech, which really should have taken off, but somehow in the past year I'm seeing more IoT (Internet of Things: "Noun. the interconnection via the Internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects," blah blah blah) going towards just WiFi. Which, ok - I can see why they want WiFi over Z-wave, but I think Z-wave can still be a thing, even when the internet goes down. But IoT is geared towards cities, suburbs, wherever they have Internet (or a reasonable amount of it). I love this deadbolt. It works regardless of whether there is internet, a grid, or whatever. I might even buy a spare. It can work completely without any WiFi or internet, you can set this up with codes right at the lock/get-go, and has the advantage against the Nest/Yale lock of having a key. (If your Nest/Yale lock goes dead you need a 9v laying around somewhere...) I am saddened that not thru Wink or SmartThings hubs can I get this deadbolt to show up in the Google Assistant/Google Home. (And no... not paying Wink's death-throes "subscription"... they had a good product, but horrible app. Sayonara, Wink...) I know Schlage did their best to anticipate the Z-wave revolution some years back, but now it's not working for those of us in Google/Alexa-realm. Otherwise, installation was easy. Programming easy. (Just don't throw away your Instruction Manual... it has your programming code on the back!) This deadbolt has served me well... even after the sunset of the Z-wave, IoT can no longer make it real in my Alexa or Google apps. BUT - that's what is amazing about it. No internet required. You don't even need WiFi. Maybe Schlage just needs to make a stand-alone version? (Probably wouldn't pass mustard these days with everything needing to be "connected") In all - good stand-alone product if nothing else. Program you own codes, and forget the Internet and IoT. ;)
