I was using it to slice beautiful, paper thin cucumber and radish slices on the thinnest, 1 mm setting for the Japanese cucumber salad I was making. I wasn’t being careful enough and sliced off the tip of my thumb. It’s so sharp I didn’t feel a thing. But the reason I mention my accident is because of any flaw with the mandolin. It was me not being careful enough. I ordered a protective chef’s glove to wear when using it in the future. Had I been using a wider slice setting it would have meant a trip to the ER. So buy the slicer, buy a protective glove ( less than $10), and happy slicing!

**Q: Is this big enough to cut zucchini long ways?**
A: I tried a zucchini.  Since the hand guard is only half the length of the zucchini, only the part of the zucchini that is under the hand guard gets cut.  I just turned the zucchini around every few slices to even it out and do the other half, but I didn't get any slices as long as the zucchini.  It slices so thin, though, that the zucchini is delicious.  I hand jullienned the slices for "pasta".

**Q: does this work well on potatoes?  I want to make oven chips.**
A: Yes. It is awesome! Use the #2 or #3 setting. When you get close to the end USE THE HOLDER!!! This is a razor blade. People who report slicing fingers were foolish. When I was done slicing a potato I had two dime size nubs left. One from the start and one from the end. If you want longer chips slice on the bias/45° angle. Be careful and USE THE HOLDER!!!

**Q: how thick does it cut?**
A: it has 3 settings.  The first setting is paper thin, about 1/16.  Second setting is 1/8 inch thick and the third setting is about 3/16 inch thick.

**Q: How does this compare to the cheaper Oxo mandolin? Is it more durable and does it cut better?**
A: They are both alike at first look, however, it seems to me that the cheaper mandolin is made of thinner plastic and the slicing blade is also thinner. I find this mandolin to be more durable and and cuts better because of the thickness of both the plastic and the blade. Hope this helps you.

This slicer is easy to use, has 3 thickness settings plus a locked setting. It comes with a safety guard which works with larger things like onions but doesn’t really work with thinner items. I was using it to slice beautiful, paper thin cucumber and radish slices on the thinnest, 1 mm setting for the Japanese cucumber salad I was making. I wasn’t being careful enough and sliced off the tip of my thumb. It’s so sharp I didn’t feel a thing. But the reason I mention my accident is because of any flaw with the mandolin. It was me not being careful enough. I ordered a protective chef’s glove to wear when using it in the future. Had I been using a wider slice setting it would have meant a trip to the ER. This mandoline is excellent. The blade is sharp and gives clean, even slices, and the adjustable thickness settings are genuinely useful. It's easy and safe to use thanks to the good grip and handguard, and it's simple to clean and store. A great addition to the kitchen - highly recommend.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Almost great, still better than most.

Oxo is great and usually I have no complaints about anything they make but this one isn’t my first love. I still think it’s worth getting though. PROS: compact size and sure grip and bowl notch make it perfect for small veggies and the adjustable thickness feature allows for some control over thickness of your slices that you don’t get on a fixed platform. The clear plastic bit that adjusts the thickness comes all the way up to the level of the blade when locked so with that and the grip tool firmly clicked into place it’s nearly impossible to cut yourself reaching for it. CONS: the small size makes it really difficult to cut potatoes or other larger format veggies. You can do it but it isn’t going to be as even or pretty as a larger mandoline. The adjustable clear ramp doesn’t lock in it’s respective levels so it can flop around a little causing uneven slices from time to time. It isn’t as easy to clean and dry as some larger mandolines I’ve used (swiss borner being my favorite personally) but that’s a matter of efficiency to me but does make me worry about hygiene a little. It’s a good 8/10 for a small hand held mandoline and certainly worth getting. I have not found myself using the adjustment feature often because the “thickest” slice is actually pretty thin so if you wanted really delicate slices on veggies this might actually be a bonus for you since it can go even thinner.
