Guitar Chords in Context: The Practical Guide to Chord Theory and Application (Learn Guitar Theory and Technique) : Alexander, Mr Joseph, Pettingale, Mr Tim: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Excellent source of information. - As always from this author, this book is well set out and full of good useful information so that you understand the structure of guitar chords. I would recommend to anyone who plays guitar. Review: Changed how I approach practice and composing - Fantastic for giving a new perspective. Even if you know about the essentials of chord construction, this makes them more practical for rhythm and lead playing. Really clear and breaks everything down to be extremely straightforward. Can not recommend enough if you are in a rut or struggling to view guitar as a harmonic instrument as well as a lead one.

For intermediate to advanced players
This book is well written and contains a multitude of guitar chords and jazz chord sequences. However, as a beginner to the guitar, I find some of the chord voicings totally impossible to finger, and a background knowledge of music theory would be useful. Some six string chord shapes in this book contain one or two middle strings that should not be played, so how do you strum the chord. In my view this book is not for the beginner, more for the intermediate or advanced player.

Highly recommended.
What makes this book so valuable to a student is that it demands that you understand rather than just learn chords. Before this book I knew quite a few chords, but never fully knew why they were what they were. But now, not only do I have a pocketful of core chords, but I know how to build on them and construct different voicings, etc. As an example, I just started music theory lessons and I needed to play Am7♭5. Before, I would have needed to look that up, but instead I was able to construct two different voicings. I have several other books by Alexander and all of them deliver in a similar way. Highly recommended.

A good way to progress once you have mastered the basics
This is a good 'next step' if you know the basics and want to progress with understanding. And that's the key for me. I know how to construct chords but very weak on where they fit. I'm about a third of the way through the book and it's still making sense. I usually give up long before this. It's a bit 'jazz' focused, but it doesn't hurt to get out of the comfort zone and learn something new. Also, you can download audio files of all the examples. Didn't spot that until I bought the book. Nice surprise. Plus You Tube Channels to subscribe to. I'm not short of things to practice!

he has this unique touch to all his books which makes me buy the kindle editions of the interesting and also relevantly useful t
All his books are very well written and clearly explained. It shows how well he knows the subject he is writing about which makes all the difference. Unlike other books which are mostly rip offs of other books, he has this unique touch to all his books which makes me buy the kindle editions of the interesting and also relevantly useful titles and carry them with me on my phone as a reference and refresher and he also provides the PDF files if requested. Can't ask for anything more :)

You'll never need a chord dictionary again!
As he did in his related book, Guitar Scales in Context, Joseph Alexander has once again revitalized the tired old concept of the guitar 'dictionary' by linking everything to practical, musical applications. Here you will not merely learn isolated, individually named chords, but rather how particular chord types are constructed in terms of interval recognition. Armed with this knowledge, you will be able to transpose them to anywhere on the guitar neck and better understand how they function within different harmonic contexts. As usual, the free audio tracks available for download help train your ears as well as your fingers. Highly recommended!

This is a very pedagogic and detailed book about Chords that covers what most beginning and itermediate players will need for quite a while. It is much of a "cover it all book" with instructions on how to apply chord theory to playing and also has full cover of audio files for all the examples one needs. A very good book!
