Koln Concert Ogv

I will only mention how I came to this album as an indication of what you might expect. It was not long ago that I was listening to Bill Parker with a friend, remarking how much I enjoyed it. Knowing me as one who enjoys classical piano he said I would like Kieth Jarrett--at least the album that he had was recommended, and it was not Koln Concert. Later that night I looked him up to purchase an album and saw that this one, Koln Concert, was highly recommended and so that is the one I purchased. Initially, I found nothing objectionable, nor anything remarkable. I found it, actually, a bit like Windham Hill artists such as George Winston or something. I found it very pleasant to play while reading, which I do a lot, so it was played over and over quite often. In doing so I started to find the genius of this Jarrett and these songs to become manifest, even quite moving. There are some parts, in fact, that I found quite profound, and this played nicely against the occasional stride piano reminiscent of Winston. Frankly, I don't know where to place this album as we so often want to do; what category of music is it? I know such questions are banal and shouldn't matter, but it does at least help up to make decisions on a purchase. So, the best I can say, is that it has moments that are a quiet jazz -- I don't even know the sub-genre. There are many moments that might appeal to those who like certain composers such as Phillip Glass or even Satie, and certainly moments that may remind one of George Winston.So yes, this album deserves the accolades. I think other listeners more adept in Jarrett's work might be able to offer a more nuanced review, but, if like me, you are new to Jarrett I hope this helps.

I fell in love with this album as a young adult and it was lost over many moves. Now I have it back, a new, mint condition album. I’m so glad I ordered from this seller. It was carefully packaged and delivered in the timeframe promised. Highly recommend the seller–and if you like jazz and Keith Jarrett, this album as well.

I was one of the few who discovered Jarrett's solo work through recordings other than this one (I first heard "Concerts" and "Solo Concerts" many, many years ago and only discovered this one about two years ago), and for that reason it took a little longer for me to really understand and appreciate it...not because it lacks anything, but only because other Jarrett works held a special place in my heart.Now, as my appreciation of all of Jarrett's masterful recordings has increased, I can appreciate this, the Cologne Concert, for what it is: A transcendant piece of music in its own right, unique from all the others. The story of its creation is remarkable: Jarrett was forced to play on an inferior piano with weak high and low ranges...as a result he concentrated on the midrange, accentuating that particular instrument's potential and creating music that sounds unlike anything else he's ever done.I initially thought it was "lighter" in texture than his other solo work (particularly the two mentioned above), now I realize that it simply speaks a different language.I think that hard-core Jarrett fans tend to regard this album with just a bit of suspicion, precisely because it has enjoyed such continuing popularity. This, of course, is nonsense: Just because this particular album enjoys mass appeal doesn't take anything away from it, and it is not this album's fault that it has spawned a score of imitations from lesser artists.The "bottom line" is that this album contains a special quality, a "magic" that transforms it into music for the ages. From the opening expression (listen for the barely-audible sound of a woman's laughter right after the first five notes) "the Cologne Concert" captures something mystical, and beyond explanation. If this is your first exposure to Keith Jarrett, I envy your voyage of discovery. Just don't let it stop here.

A moving performance accessible at multiple levels.

I can hear my beloved music theory teacher mocking Keith Jarrett even now. He derisively said that his extended solo piano improvisations are too "modal" and "meandering" in their tonality. And then turned around and said Chopin and Beethoven's music is great, in part, due to their "extension" of the modal composers techniques that came before them--and this includes Gregorian Chant. As any half aware person knows, Gregorian Chant is COMPLETELY modal and has no system of "modulation" as we commonly would define it nowadays.Anyway, this CD is wonderful. I never get bored with the sounds on this CD. Jarrett's turn many corners but never strays from the "idea" in his improvisations. Being a great musical improvisor is hard--PERIOD! The tonal subtlety and emotional content is stunning. He has great chops and tech, as well. I had this recoding when it first came out on vinyl--I find it's charm and brilliance as compelling today as it was then. In fact, its depth is so hefty, I can still pick out new subtleties today.I suggest that you read this in depth analysis and historical perspective along with listening to this great CD:  Keith Jarrett's The Koln Concert (Oxford Studies in Recorded Jazz) The score is also a must:  The Koln Concert: Original Transcription

Many years ago, early 1980's (?) I was at my Sister's and her hubby was playing this in the background. I was a predominantly 'soul boy' and just didn't 'get it'.15 years later I tried the CD version and 'I got it'.If you like this type of music, this is one of the 'keynote' recordings.Having revived my record deck etc I added the vinyl copy of the recording and it not only does not disappoint but it also has the final track that is missing from my CD version.

Es ist mir egal, ob das Album zu kommerziell ist, zu uninspiriert, oder was man hier alles lesen kann (auch in der Presse). Für mich ist es die optimale Mischung zwischen meditativer Musik und Ausschweifungen. Mir ist auch ziemlich Wurscht, was Herr Jarrett damit verarbeitet, ich finde das Album nie nervig. Das ist für mich der Grund, warum ich dieses Album bestimmt schon zum fünften Mal gekauft habe und es manchmal verschenke. Für Anfänger im œvre Jarretts unbedingt zu empfehlen.

Donner ses impressions ? Pourquoi non ? Mais elles risquent de diverger d'un auditeur à l'autre, essayons de nous mettre dans la peau de l'illustre pianiste.... et peut être.... : Comme quelques gouttes de pluie qui viendraient assouvir la soif de ses auditeurs en ce 24 Janvier 1975 Keith Jarrett vient réchauffer les cœurs de Cologne et de ceux qui se sont déplacés pour l'entendre, le voir et même le toucher, frôler car à l’époque il était déjà une légende. Gouttes de pluie en noir et blanc sur le clavier du pianiste bien douces aux auditeurs.Dès le début nous ressentons ce que nous savions déjà : Keith Jarret à le sens de la musique dans la peau, inscrite dans ses gènes. Cet A.D.N. nous surprend, nous happe, nous oblige à faire silence et nos oreilles se dirigent vers une source de magie, oui au bout des poignets de Monsieur Jarret se trouvent dix baguettes magiques en formes de doigts.Écoutez à 6'25" : d'où viennent ses sortes de percussions ? Frappe t'il le bois du piano ? Je n'en sais rien, il le fait c'est tout. Ce court moment est comme un appel car il me semble reconnaître une partie déjà entendue ailleurs.À 8'15" : Tout est syncopé.À 8'45" : Vient un pseudo calme voulu tout en agitant ses doigts tel un prestidigitateur sur son clavier.À 9'15" : Un rythme "simple" nous arrive mais nous avons cette étrange impression que les doigts de Keith Jarret volent au dessus du clavier avec des arpèges très rapides, nous sentons qu'il s'envole dans un beau voyage.13'06" : La ligne mélodique s'assouplit presque "andante" à 14' jusqu'à un lento à 15'10" Sur son clavier il nous donne un son de clochette vers 17'30" à un lento à 20'00" suivi d’arpèges chromatiques aériennes qui nous renvoient au début de cette première partie se terminant en douceur et avec des applaudissements nourris. Fin de ma première partiePartie IINous sommes dans les graves et nous restons sur une improvisation persistante avec la main gauche tandis que la droite semble vouloir fuir dans les aigus, ce qu'elle fait. Cette partie est très intéressante pour nos oreilles ! La main gauche semble ne pas vouloir bouger tandis que l'autre s'évade sur toute la longueur du clavier. À 5'00" les graves sont occupées par les deux mains; À 5'55" nous changeons, un peu, de motif mais avec la même redondance de la main gauche mais le tempo s’accélère les deux mains se chevauchent sur les graves...8'05" Vient un lento contrastant avec ce que nous pouvons nommer une première partie de second mouvement. À nouveau, battements sur le corps du piano. Keith Jarret donne cette impression,d'apaisement sans rapport avec la première partie.10'20", là nous nous évadons vers une sorte d'eau claire d'où s'évadent encore des gouttelettes scintillantes et Keith vers les berges verdoyantes d'une rivière se dirigeant petit à petit verts les ormes graves têtards cent fois coupés en formes de notes graves en finale de cette seconde partie de 14'54".Partie IIILa main gauche reste toujours dans les graves alors que la droite s'évade sur toutes les gammes. Un sentiment de sérénité peut nous envahir alors que Keith Jarret retourne vers un jazz plus prononcé. Nous chevauchons entre classique et jazz; cette partie est très intéressante pour son jeu et magnifique à nos oreilles. À 5'40" Keith explore furtivement la gauche la plus grave du clavier, puis une sorte de calme survient avec quelques notes répétées longuement . Mais vers 7'30" nous retrouvons la trame du début du concert ( voulu ou non ? ). À partir de 8'30" (Ce que je vais écrire pourra vous paraître étrange mais ce ne sera que normal. Keith donne cette impression plus qu' étrange qu'il se trouve à l'intérieur du piano ! Il plaque les accords sa,s ne jamais oublier le début du concert, il reste sur sa ligne, le train ne veut pas dérailler...Subitement il se dirige vers une ligne plus classique en frôlant Debussy, de Satie, de Saint-Saëns .... mais cela reste mon impression, puis reviennent les fines gouttelettes d'un éclatant ruisseau qui s'élargit vers les graves, encore, dévalant tout à coup une colline pour aller enfin se reposer tout doucement dans un lento avec quelques soubresauts .À 16'10" nous retournons dans les notes et le rythme d'un jazz pur allant diminuendo.Applaudissements très nourris.Partie IVMe piano chante, les doigts de Keith Jarret courent sur la clavier entre jazz et classique. La ligne mélodique est plus évidente comme venue pour nous apaiser mais en restant entre 80/90 battements par minute.Keith Jarret semble calmer ses émotions et les nôtres. Un calme ressemblant à une vision d'un lac calme, stagnant, comme celui de l’Infante de Victor Hugo......Une minute trente d'applaudissements demandant le retour du Maître, mais je pense qu'il ont continué bien après que le disque ne se soit arrêté, dans mon esprit il joue encore.C'est un disque incontournable pour celles et ceux qui aiment le jazz.
