Five stars in 1993, Afraid to purchase now. For shame, Hasbro!!
I gave this five stars based upon the toy that I bought for my son in 1993. It was PERFECT. No problems with the blower. The motor was quiet, the butterflies all flew out gently, and it was a joy for my toddler to just watch and perchance, catch a few. As he got older, he and his friends used the nets. I wanted to purchase this for my grand-nephews but clearly the design has changed. How sad. No way would I buy this current design. A penny more per toy for a better motor would make this PERFECT once again! Come on, Hasbro! You are being penny-wise, dollar foolish! Step up to the AMERICAN dream. Put out a good product, and watch the $$ come in.

Better than I thought it would be...
After reading some of the reviews here on Amazon about Elefun- The Butterfly Catching Game! I was leary of purchasing it. My daughter had her heart set on it for Christmas so I caved in and boy, am I glad I did! It has been nothing but fun! Set up was a breeze, and I followed someone's recommendation of snipping a few inches off the trunk right off the get-go. True to word, the butterflies started flying and my 3 year old was thrilled! She caught quite a few just holding the net by the elephant trunk, and later progressed to trying to catch them in the net. The plastic seems somewhat flimsy, but other components seem sturdy and long wearing. After a few runs, my daughter was able to open the elephant and replace the butterflies herself for the next round. The motor is quiet, just powerful enough to push out the butterflies and construction seems safe. I would highly recommend this game for any active preschooler who has winter blues!

People are too hard on this toy
People are really too hard on this toy. We've had it since Christmas, and my kids love it. Isn't that the point? I really thought this game was a gimmick when I saw it advertised, but my son really wanted it for Christmas and Grandma got it. Both my 2 and almost 4 year old giggle like mad when playing this game. All that laughter and running around are worth the few problems with this game. I'm glad I read the reviews, because one mom mentioned the importance of spreading the butterfly wings in order for them to "fly" properly. This really does help. I have never had more than 2 butterflies get stuck in the trunk. It really isn't a big deal because in a minute the kids and I have them back in the elephant and ready to go again. It doesn't make the game any less fun. If the fan were more powerful, the butterflies would all come out at once, and it would last about two seconds. My kids have learned to anticipate the butterflies and listen for more still in the trunk. This actually builds excitement as they attempt to guess when the butterfly will come out, and exactly where it will go. The whole game really helps with hand-eye coordination. The only reason this game didn't get 5 stars is that I also share some concerns regarding the durability of the trunk since we store it in the box and the trunk is always rolled up and creased in the same spot.

so cute
The families I've given this to have all loved it. There is something magical and whimsical about it. At the same time, it's true the batteries run out fast and after the trunk gets crinkled somehow the butterflies tend to get stuck. But seriously, the looks on the faces of the kids with their little nets, waiting for the butterflies, it's pretty worth it.

Not as much fun as I would have thought
I purchased this item for my children for Christmas. They were both very excited about playing with it. The product works fine however the butterflies come out so fast that the fun is over in seconds. The head of the elephant is hard to remove so you must be there to assist your children with refilling the elephant and starting the game over and over and over again. Kids could play 50 times in 2 minutes which makes the novelty wear off quickly.

Messy, Floppy, Annoying Toy
This toy is a pain in the neck. I thought it looked cute and may be fun for my twins. The "butterflies" all come out very quickly and mostly all over the floor. It takes a few seconds for the fun to be over. SO.... it's reset and restart every 30 seconds or so. That is frustrating for the parent and the kids. The quality of this product could be better, as could the execution (timed releases of the butterflies perhaps). I found it very annoying personally. The kids didn't really enjoy it after the first 2-3 resets.

Elefun fun
We bought the Elefun toy for our grand daughter's 4th birthday. When she started unwrapping it, she went into ectasy when she saw the picture on the box. Took a bit of persuading to persuade her to allow the adult presents to help open the box, remove the Elefun, and put the two D cell batteries in (which are not included). She delighted herself by playing with it for a long time. She innovated new ways to have fun: not bother to catch the butterflies with a net, just stand and let the butterflies "rain" on her. Or she would put the butterflies in and turn on the fan and allow them to errupt immediately. Fraom an adult perspective: it teaches hand-eye coordinaqtion in netting the butterflies.

Fun Fun for All
I bought this as a christmas present, but of course, she was standing there when i opened the box. We quickly set it up, put in batteries, turned it on, and waited, waited, waited, finally out shot 1 butterfly. slowly the others started to follow, needs just a bit more umph to shoot those little guys out. We will have papa jazz it up. I agree, too short of playing time. takes more time picking them up than actually playing. We did get the baby to giggling watching us chase butterflies. I cut up some light weight material and made more butterflies. Had a blast catching them, blast picking them up, my 3 yr old will ONLY catch a certain color, along with counting, great for learning all that fun stuff.
