The toothpaste is fluoride free and is safe for babies to swallow. The toothpaste is a clear gel. I'm not sure what it tastes like but I'm sure it tastes good to babies because my daughter doesn't mind it. It took her a few days to get used to having the baby tooth brush in her mouth. She's fine with it now. She was teething for several months and she had no problem letting everyone know that her poor little gums hurt so much (my poor girl). By 11 months, she got four teeth in one day. At this point, I could no longer use the gum massager...she bites HARD! I still use the Orajel, it's a great product! I just don't recommend using it after your little one gets the teeth!Now, I put the Orajel on a baby's first toothbrush/teether that I also found on Amazon I put the Orajel on the teether, stick it in the freezer, so by the time she goes to bed, she has a soothing teether that helps swoolen gums that have teeth yet to come through and cleans the teeth that are already there! It's also great to use during bathtime. I've done it a few days now, and now my one 13 month old looks for the teether. It also distracts her while I'm bathing her.
