I started using Genki Volume 1 on the recommendation of my Japanese language teacher, who mentioned that this textbook is widely used in language schools across Japan. It’s easy to see why it’s so popular. Each chapter builds on the last, which has really helped me progress smoothly and confidently. I like how clear this is (while also still tackling a complicated language). I thought I could breeze through these but even lesson one took me a bit to make sure I recalled the information and could practice. Pleased so far!

After completing Genki I and II, I feel very confident at a Japanese mid-N4 level. The textbook practice and accompanying workbook exercises are vital, in my opinion. There are many Japanese language learning resources on the internet these days; however, using a mix of this textbook, YouTube videos to accompany it, and my own flashcards, I have built a very solid foundation of the language.

The best textbook out there for learning Japanese. As a self learner, I highly recommend it.
