## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐

Author describes Gullah Culture in coastal Carolina and Georgia

*by J***S on Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2015*

I found "Gullah Culture in America" mildly interesting, a bit dry, but useful as my wife and I plan to visit Beaufort County at the end of April. The author clearly is knowledgeable about his topic, but his presentation is more two-dimensional than three-dimensional. By that I mean I would have liked to hear more personal stories of Gullah residents, their challenges, hopes and joys.Rural cultures, such as the Gullah culture, does lack the excitement of urban culture, but still I wished for more.

    Recovering a lost hisitory

*by R***H on Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2015*

It's only since about 1970 that attention has been given to the culture of the black people, called the Gullah people, whose ancestors were captured in western Africa and enslaved in the South Carolina Sea Islands. Scholars and writers are now making up for lost time, and their findings are adding a rich chapter to American history. We should all know about it, and I recommend this book highly.
