The hydrocarbons are what this detects, and exhaust gasses create them. If the headgasket is intact, you won't have hydrocarbons in your coolant. So it's a pretty darn good test. I was able to use this on a car that ran fine, showed no issues, but slightly overheated at red lights. It confirmed that the headgasket is indeed blown and will save me tons of time and money.
